The Vietnamese swimming team has arrived in Thailand to compete at the 33rd SEA Games, carrying great determination and the hope of continuing to affirm its position as one of the key sports of Vietnamese Sports.
After many years of maintaining stable performance in the region, the swimmers are expected to continue to bring home many gold medals, making an important contribution to the overall ranking of the Vietnamese delegation.
At the 32nd SEA Games in Cambodia, the Vietnamese swimming team won 7 gold medals, ranking second in the region and just behind Singapore, which dominated with 22 gold medals. Although it did not reach the 8 gold medals mark as expected by the coaching staff, the impressive performances of the swimmers still brought many promising signs for the future.
At the 33rd SEA Games, the Vietnamese swimming team received significant attention and investment from the Department of Physical Training and Sports. Over the past time, the swimmers have been continuously given the opportunity to participate in many international tournaments, both to gain experience, hone their competitive spirit, and bring about encouraging results for the country's swimming.
At the 2025 Southeast Asian Age Group Aquatics Championships in Singapore held in June this year, the Vietnamese Sports Delegation with 38 members competed impressively, winning a total of 22 gold medals, 21 silver medals and 13 bronze medals, thereby ranking third overall. This result also affirmed the position of Vietnamese young swimmers in the region.

In parallel, the Vietnamese swimming team also has 4 swimmers participating in the 2025 World Swimming Championships, also taking place in Singapore. This is the top playground, where Nguyen Huy Hoang, Pham Thanh Bao, Nguyen Quang Thuan and Vo Thi My Tien have the opportunity to compete with the world's top opponents.
Although they did not make it to the finals, Vietnamese swimmers still left a remarkable mark. Accordingly, Huy Hoang achieved 15 minutes 19 seconds 39 in the 1,500m freestyle, ranking 14th in the qualifying round, Quang Thuan ranked 25th in the 400m medley. These results show that the gap with the leading group is still large, but the experience gained will help the athletes adjust their performance before competing at the 33rd SEA Games.
Head coach of the Vietnamese swimming team Nguyen Hong Vu said that the current force has become more balanced compared to the 32nd SEA Games 2 years ago thanks to the clear progress of the athletes. Therefore, the coaching staff also has higher expectations for the swimmers at this year's Games.
“Currently, the strength of the Vietnamese swimming team is quite even as the athletes have made clear progress after the previous SEA Games. Considering the balance of power, the team's common goal is to exceed individual targets and strive to win 7 gold medals or more. To realize this, in the past time, the team has had many training trips at home and abroad and participated in a number of international tournaments to gain experience before officially competing in the 33rd SEA Games.”

At the 33rd SEA Games, Nguyen Huy Hoang continues to be the number one hope of the Vietnamese swimming team. Although he has not returned to his best form, the 25-year-old swimmer is still a great hope in the 400m and 1,500m freestyle long distances, where he has held the number one position in Southeast Asia for many years.
“Huy Hoang has received a huge investment to prepare for the 33rd SEA Games. Although he has not had any outstanding achievements in the past, the continuous international competitions have helped Hoang maintain his physical condition and improve his skills. I expect Hoang to achieve good results in his two strong events, the 400m and 1500m freestyle,” coach Nguyen Hong Vu shared.
Huy Hoang himself also expressed his confidence ahead of the congress: “Currently, I am in good physical condition and in a very comfortable spirit to prepare for the 33rd SEA Games. My goal is to win 1 to 2 gold medals, of which I am most confident in the 1,500m distance. The opponents from Malaysia and Singapore are both very strong, but I always believe in my own abilities. Recently, I had a training trip in China and participated in a number of international tournaments before the 33rd SEA Games,” the 25-year-old swimmer shared.

In addition to Huy Hoang, Pham Thanh Bao is also in good form in the 100m and 200m breaststroke, while Nguyen Quang Thuan is likely to compete for a medal in the mixed event. In the women's group, Vo Thi My Tien is maintaining a stable performance with many national records, while young talent Nguyen Thuy Hien (impressive with a record at the Southeast Asian Youth Championship and has a place at the 2025 World Youth Championships.)
According to expert Gustavo Piza (Brazil), who has closely followed the athletes' training process over the past time, he has made great determination with them at the 33rd SEA Games. Previously, in early 2025, Mr. Gustavo was appointed by the Department of Physical Training and Sports to the National Swimming Team Coaching Board with the goal of helping athletes achieve high results at regional and continental competitions.
“I am impressed with the professional level of Vietnamese swimmers. They always practice with admirable diligence. However, the limitation is that when entering the official competition, they have not fully demonstrated their inherent abilities. In the past 8 months, I have focused on analyzing technique, psychology, physical strength and building separate training plans for each event, while also focusing on developing basic skills for the young force. In the past time, the athletes have made remarkable progress and I believe that the whole team is ready for the 33rd SEA Games,” the Brazilian expert emphasized.
The Vietnamese swimming team has officially arrived in Thailand and is ready to enter the first competitions at the 33rd SEA Games. After careful preparation, the swimmers will officially compete tomorrow (December 10) in a series of events including: 200m medley for men, 200m butterfly for women, 100m freestyle for men, 50m breaststroke for women and 100m backstroke for men.
The final swimming events will also take place on the same day, promising a dramatic opening and an opportunity for the Vietnamese swimming team to make their mark right from the first events.
