According to Indonesia's leading sports newspaper, coach Philippe Troussier is at risk of being fired for the second time due to losing to Indonesia, following Vietnam's defeat in the semi-finals of the 32nd SEA Games.
Coach Troussier was fired by Qatar after losing 1-2 to Indonesia in the first round of the 2004 Asian Cup group stage in Beijing, China. The Qatar Football Association announced the early termination of his contract right after that match, when the team still had two matches left. For Indonesia, it was their first victory in the history of the Asian Cup.

Yesterday afternoon, May 13, Vietnam lost 2-3 to Indonesia in the final minutes despite having an extra player in the semi-finals of the 32nd SEA Games. "Coach Troussier was once fired because of Indonesia, and is facing a similar risk after Vietnam's painful defeat," was the headline of Bolasport .
Bolasport is Indonesia's leading sports news site, with nearly 17 million visits in April 2022, according to SimilarWeb .
This news site pointed out that there are Vietnamese fans on social media who are no longer satisfied with Coach Troussier. This is Vietnam's first defeat against a Southeast Asian U23 team since the 2017 SEA Games. Vietnam also missed the opportunity to win the third consecutive men's football gold medal.
Vietnam’s statistics are also not impressive, as Troussier’s team scored 10 goals but conceded six times in the tournament. The last time Vietnam conceded more than six goals at the SEA Games was in 2011. Since the age limit for men’s football was set at U23 level, Vietnam has only conceded more than six goals at the Games three times. That does not include the bronze medal match against Myanmar on the afternoon of May 16.
At the 2011 SEA Games, Vietnam also lost to Indonesia in the semi-finals, then lost in the bronze medal match against Myanmar. That was the first official tournament of coach Falko Gotz with Vietnam, however, he was fired immediately after the Games ended.
Coach Troussier, 68, led Japan to win the 2000 Asian Cup, become runner-up at the 2001 FIFA Confederations Cup and reach the 2002 World Cup round of 16. He led Vietnam to replace coach Park Hang-seo, who lost all pre-SEA Games friendly matches. However, it was not until June 2023 that the French coach led the Vietnamese team to compete for the first time. Also in that month, U23 Vietnam also participated in the Panda Cup friendly tournament in China.
