Benzema was disappointing. |
Al Hilal was once expected to dominate every competition after spending heavily in the transfer market. However, their actual performance has not lived up to the enormous amount of money the club spent.
Despite maintaining an unbeaten record throughout the season, Al Hilal were unable to achieve their biggest goal: winning the Saudi Pro League. The only title Karim Benzema and his teammates won this season was the King's Cup.
Notably, the signing of Benzema from Al Ittihad became a topic of criticism for Al Hilal's management from fans. The team spent around 25 million euros to bring the French striker to the club despite him having only a few months left on his contract with his former club, and also offered him one of the highest salaries in the league (around 1.97 million pounds per week).
When he first joined, Benzema was considered a "blockbuster" signing that shook Saudi Arabian football. Al Hilal was immediately regarded as the top contender for the championship, given Al Nassr's declining performance.
However, Benzema has not lived up to expectations. The former Ballon d'Or winner has frequently suffered from fitness issues, played inconsistently, and missed many important matches.
Notably, the majority of Benzema's goals came against bottom-of-the-table teams, while he was largely ineffective in big matches against direct competitors. After 13 games for Al Hilal, Benzema scored 9 goals.
Despite still possessing the class of a legend, Benzema is clearly no longer the explosive version that once struck fear into Europe. For Al Hilal, this season will likely be remembered as an expensive but failed gamble.
