Vietnam women's volleyball team unexpectedly abandons SEA Games gold medal target

Based on the actual situation, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team has changed its goals at the upcoming 33rd SEA Games.

Earlier this year, the Vietnamese women’s volleyball team was tasked with winning the gold medal at the 33rd SEA Games in Thailand. At that time, coach Nguyen Tuan Kiet’s team had a strong squad and had competed in many major tournaments.

In August, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team defeated Thailand to win a stage of the SEA V.League, a volleyball tournament for strong teams in Southeast Asia. It was also the first time that the "big sister" of the region, Thailand, could not win the championship in this playground.

To do that, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team relied heavily on Bich Tuyen. In the historic victory over Thailand, the 2000-born athlete alone scored 45 points, bringing the home team to the championship.

Therefore, the hope for the SEA Games gold medal was even greater. But then at the Women's Volleyball World Championship later, the whole team lost the service of Bich Tuyen for personal reasons.

Returning to the National Championship, this setter was also unable to play for LPBank Ninh Binh due to injury. Therefore, Bich Tuyen was again not called up to the national team to prepare for the SEA Games.

Despite the absence of an important star, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team initially aimed for a historic gold medal. But this target has now changed.

It is known that in a recent working session with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Department of Physical Training and Sports adjusted the goal of the Vietnamese women's volleyball team from gold medal to silver medal.

Part of the reason is that the team does not have the best force. Besides, lowering the target is also aimed at reducing psychological pressure so that the remaining athletes can compete better.

At the 33rd SEA Games, the Vietnamese women's volleyball team is in Group B with Indonesia, Myanmar and Malaysia. This is a fairly easy group and the top spot is almost certain to be in the hands of Thanh Thuy and her teammates.

Meanwhile, group A includes host Thailand, the team that has won 14 consecutive SEA Games, the Philippines and Singapore.

If there are no surprises, this year's final will almost certainly be a showdown between Vietnam and Thailand.
