"Malaysian football has been sleepwalking for the past decade," headlined the New Straits Times , quoting coach Peter Cklamovski.
The New Straits Times reported that coach Cklamovski said that the youth football system in Malaysia has been completely broken for many years. The newspaper also assessed that "Mr. Cklamovski's views are very valuable because he has devoted his career to developing youth football".
Specifically, coach Cklamovski made this comment when asked about the failure of U17 Malaysia, in an interview:
"I am very passionate about this question... if we look at history, Malaysia's youth teams at the U23, U20, U17 age groups have never qualified for the Asian tournament on a regular basis.
I think the development of youth football (in Malaysia) is in trouble and needs support. The youth leagues are very weak, the structure is chaotic. Some states do this, some states do that.
If we are lucky we get a tournament that organizes 10 or 11 matches a year for the U13 and U14 teams. What hope do we have as a football nation?
As a national team coach, I have to lead the main team of football, and aim to win right now. But I also have the responsibility to plan for the future. And that is the weakness of Malaysian football at the moment, everything is very chaotic."
In the interview, Mr. Cklamovski wants the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) to learn from the solid model of the Japanese, which spans from the youth training system to the school football level.
"Malaysian football has been sleepwalking for a decade," Mr. Cklamovski concluded, a comment that made Malaysian football fans feel bitter.
