Killing lice, woman burns cornea
A 44-year-old woman had to go to the Vietnam-Sweden Uong Bi Hospital for emergency treatment because of corneal burns after letting lice-killing solution flow into her eyes.
According to the patient, while applying lice treatment to his hair at home, the chemical accidentally dripped into his eyes. The patient was admitted to the hospital with red, painful, and irritated eyes.
At the Ophthalmology Department, doctors diagnosed the patient with corneal conjunctivitis. Immediately, the on-call team cleaned the eye, combined with antibiotics, painkillers and drugs to enhance corneal nutrition. After treatment, the burning pain symptoms were reduced and the patient's vision gradually improved.
Not long before, an 8-year-old boy also suffered corneal burns and could not open his eyes. The cause was that the family crushed custard apple seeds, then boiled water for the boy to wash his hair to treat lice, and unfortunately the custard apple seed water flowed into his eyes.
What are the symptoms of eye burns?

Eye burns can damage both the eyelids as well as the cornea.
Eye burns are caused by many reasons. Burns can be caused by chemicals (acids, bases or lime) and often occur in industry, laboratories, daily life and work. In addition, there are other causes of eye burns such as heat burns, molten metal burns, ultraviolet rays, welding burns, etc.
Symptoms to watch out for
To properly care for your eyes, you need to understand some of the main signs and symptoms of eye burns:
- Eye pain, difficulty opening eyes, watery eyes;
- Blurred or blurred vision;
- Eyelid burns of various degrees, especially the eyelid margins, the tear ducts may also be damaged.
Eye exam:
- Conjunctiva may have: conjunctival hyperemia, conjunctival edema, petechial hemorrhages around the limbus, subconjunctival hemorrhage, conjunctival ischemia.
- The cornea may be slightly opaque, the corneal epithelium may be slipped, or worse, the cornea may be opaque or even porcelain white, so the iris and lens underneath cannot be seen.
- There is a reaction with the uvea: tyndal (+), iris adhesion, possible increased intraocular pressure.
- pH measurement determines whether the burn is acidic or alkaline.
- The patient's whole body is tired, anxious and panicked.
- If severe burns are combined with full body burns with large burn areas, shock can occur.
- Paraclinical tests in eye burns help determine associated injuries and prognosis. They include visual acuity measurement, intraocular pressure measurement (can measure intraocular pressure or icare, if the cornea is extensively damaged, ultrasound and eye X-ray can be used to determine associated injuries such as intraocular foreign bodies).
Treatment for eye burns
Eye burns are an ophthalmological emergency, and can affect one or both eyes. Improper first aid can greatly affect subsequent treatment and can leave serious sequelae.
Eye burns can cause damage to the eyelids as well as the cornea and intraocular tissues, making treatment difficult. The prognosis is often poor and can lead to irreversible blindness. The initial treatment and care of patients with eye burns greatly affect the prognosis of the disease.
Care for eye burn patients immediately after eye burns need to wash eyes with clean water, time from 15-20 minutes. This should be done immediately after the burn to reduce the blistering. Especially with chemical burns, this washing needs to be done immediately. Then close your eyes to rest and move immediately to a medical facility.
When taking the patient to the hospital, family members should bring the bottle and label of the solution or chemical that caused the injury to the hospital so that the doctor can quickly identify the type of chemical that caused the burn and provide the fastest, most accurate and effective treatment.
In summary: Eye burns are a common problem. Everyone needs to be aware of eye burn prevention and be careful in daily activities and work to avoid accidents. People who work in jobs with a high risk of burns must be equipped with protective gear and strictly comply with labor safety regulations.
