Bruno should have had more than 20 assists this season. |
Bruno is having a season where the statistics speak for themselves, but the reality on the pitch reveals a paradox. He creates everything, but doesn't always receive the rewards he deserves.
Fernandes is amazing!
The Portuguese midfielder reached the milestone of 20 assists in the 2025/26 Premier League season, a feat worthy of etching his name in history. However, that number still stands at "20" instead of "21," meaning he hasn't yet surpassed the records of Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.
Bruno is the one who creates the most beautiful passes, but those beautiful pieces aren't always completed. In fact, many of Bruno's passes don't translate into goals, not because of a lack of opportunities, but because the finishing quality of MU's attack is inconsistent.

Bruno brings great creativity to MU's attack. |
Prior to the 3-2 victory against Nottingham Forest on May 17th, data from Opta indicated that Bruno had created 11 scoring opportunities since his last assist. In the two matches against Liverpool and Sunderland, his expected assists (xA) reached 1.23. This means, theoretically, he should have had at least one assist. However, football doesn't operate according to statistical formulas.
In the match against Forest, Bruno continued to demonstrate his dominance in the creative department. He made 8 key passes (passes that created scoring opportunities), and created 2 clear-cut chances that could have resulted in goals. However, the final result was only one successful assist. The rest was wasted due to the lack of sharpness in the attack.
The biggest paradox lies in the fact that Bruno is the true architect of the attacking system, but the "structure" isn't always completed. He designs the ideal passes, but the player who finishes them often fails to meet expectations.
Too bad for Bruno.
Manchester United this season has therefore still somewhat lacked reliability in finishing. Bryan Mbeumo scored, but still missed quite a few chances against Forest. Amad Diallo and Joshua Zirkzee also failed to provide the necessary consistency. Zirkzee even played very poorly when he came on as a substitute.
Nevertheless, it's undeniable that Bruno remains one of the most influential players in the Premier League this season. He leads the league in chances created, maintains a central role in every attacking move, and is a tactical cornerstone in interim manager Michael Carrick's system.

Manchester United's attack is still wasting too many opportunities. |
Statistically, Bruno had an almost perfect 2025/26 season with 8 goals and 20 assists in 34 games. The former Sporting Lisbon star deserved to be nominated for Player of the Season. He was just one assist away from surpassing the records of Henry and De Bruyne.
With MU already secured a Champions League spot and sitting in the top group of the league table, Bruno still has at least one more game to continue writing his story.
But the bigger question isn't about position, but about the quality of play up front. Can MU capitalize on Bruno at his creative peak, or will his passes continue to be overlooked statistics?
Ultimately, Bruno may create the most beautiful picture, but without someone to color it properly, it remains just an unfinished sketch. He paints the picture of MU's attacking play, but how beautiful that picture is depends on the feet of others.
