Italy A lunchtime diet of minestrone soup, natural sourdough bread and wine has been the Melis family's secret to longevity for many years.
Dan Buettner, an expert on the lifestyle habits of Blue Zones, where most people live to be over 100 years old, posted a video sharing the lunch regimen of the " world's oldest family" - the Melis family in Italy. In 2012, they set a Guinness World Record for the combined age of nine siblings, reaching 861 years.

The family said lunch was usually pretty similar, consisting of minestrone soup, natural sourdough bread and a little red wine.
Minestrone soup (Italian vegetable soup)
Buettner said the family eats minestrone soup, which is made from a variety of garden vegetables and always includes three types of beans: garbanzo, pinto, and white beans. Beans are considered the “perfect superfood” in the Blue Zone diet, according to the Blue Zones website.
Anna Herby, a nutritioneducator in the US, says beans have a close relationship with longevity. "The fiber in beans can slow down the digestion of starch, which is beneficial for the gut microbiome and the ability to reduce blood cholesterol," Anna says.
Samantha Cassetty, a nutritionist in New York City (USA), added that people who live long and healthy lives all eat about half a cup to a cup of beans every day. In addition, minestrone soup is rich in vegetables, can improve the intestines, is a good food to prolong life.

Naturally Sourdough Bread
People in the blue zones often eat fermented foods every day, and naturally fermented sourdough bread is beneficial for gut health, says Cassetty.
“This bread doesn’t cause a spike in blood sugar like white bread, but it helps stabilize blood sugar levels. High blood sugar can contribute to insulin resistance and increase the risk of type 2 diabetes,” Cassetty says, adding that naturally sourdough bread also helps keep you full and increases insulin sensitivity.

Wine
The Melins only sip about 60-90 ml of wine at lunch. Alcohol can increase good cholesterol levels, says Cassetty, but she warns that drinking every day can be harmful to your health.
Blue Zones are home to the highest number of centenarians, including Loma Linda, California, Okinawa, Japan, Sardinia, Italy, Nicoya, Costa Rica, and Ikaria, Greece. Diet is an important cornerstone in Blue Zones, with most people favoring fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, whole grains, and olive oil.
