In the context of rapidly increasing electricity demand, traditional fossil energy sources gradually depleting, and the inevitable need for green energy transition, this event marks an important turning point for energy security and sustainable development goals of Dong Nai , as well as Vietnam.
Vietnam's first LNG power plant
Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 power plants are the first power plant complexes in the country to operate on liquefied natural gas, marking a transition from coal-fired thermal power to cleaner energy sources.
Mr. Le Ba Quy, Director of the Power Project Management Board, Vietnam Oil and Gas Power Corporation - JSC (PV Power) said: Up to now, the project complex has reached more than 99% of the overall progress. In particular, Nhon Trach 3 Power Plant has completed all testing, acceptance and officially put into commercial operation with a total test output of about 666 million kWh. Nhon Trach 4 Power Plant is running a test with an output of about 306 million kWh, expected to generate commercial electricity in December 2025.
The Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 Power Plant Project was approved by the Prime Minister in 2019, the investor is Vietnam Oil and Gas Power Corporation (PV Power). The project has a capacity of more than 1,600 MW, a total investment of 1.4 billion USD, and is scheduled to be operational in 2025.
Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 Power Plants are key national projects in the energy sector, with a total investment of 1.4 billion USD, a capacity of more than 1,600 MW, and are expected to contribute about 9 billion kWh of electricity to the national grid each year. This is also a key power source project prioritized in the Power Plan VIII and the adjusted Power Plan VIII to ensure electricity supply for the Southern key economic region - the largest electricity consumer in the country.
According to Mr. Le Nhu Linh, General Director of PV Power, Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 power plants are among the few gas turbine units with the largest capacity (over 500MW) and gas efficiency (over 60%) in the world. Putting the project into operation has affirmed PV Power as a pioneer in the field of modern gas electricity, creating a foundation for forming a complete LNG value chain, from import, storage to electricity production. Not only that, when put into operation, the project will contribute to implementing the Government's commitment to net zero emissions by 2050 at COP26. Because, compared to coal, LNG electricity helps reduce emissions by 30-50%. The official operation of the project is an important milestone for Vietnam to be listed on the map of countries using LNG to produce electricity.
Project driving Dong Nai economic growth
For Dong Nai, Nhon Trach 3 and Nhon Trach 4 Power Plants are not only an energy project but also a strategic driving force for economic growth. This is the largest power source project in the province in the period of 2021-2030. When put into operation, it will ensure a stable power source for key industries such as steel, chemicals, processing - manufacturing, logistics...; at the same time, it will create a foundation for the development of seaport, gas and electricity infrastructure in the Southwest region of the province, opening up ancillary services and creating a significant additional source of revenue for the provincial budget.
At the thematic conference on some key tasks and solutions in the last months of the year to achieve the target of double-digit economic growth in 2025, held on November 8, Provincial Party Committee member and Director of the Department of Finance Truong Thi Huong Binh said: Putting Nhon Trach 3 Power Plant into operation in November and Nhon Trach 4 Power Plant into operation in December 2025 is one of the important factors helping the province achieve the target of growth in the industrial and service sectors, as well as double-digit economic growth in 2025 and the following years. The project not only increases the ability to provide stable electricity for production and consumption but also brings sustainable revenue to the provincial budget.
Also at the above conference, Provincial Party Committee member and Director of the Department of Industry and Trade Vu Ngoc Long said: Removing obstacles so that important power source and grid projects can be completed on schedule is the key task of the industry in 2025. In the coming time, the Department of Industry and Trade will continue to actively coordinate with investors and localities to resolve arising difficulties, while urging progress to promptly put the power plant into commercial operation, serving production and export.
Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son, when inspecting the project on November 20, highly appreciated the investor and contractors for their efforts to complete the key project cluster of the energy sector and generate commercial electricity.
The Deputy Prime Minister emphasized: In the context of the economy aiming for growth of over 8% in 2025 and double-digit growth in the next period, having more clean, large-capacity power sources is an important condition to attract high-tech projects, data centers and the artificial intelligence sector, which are industries that consume large amounts of electricity.
"Dong Nai urgently completes site clearance for transmission lines to ensure capacity release for the factory" - Deputy Prime Minister Bui Thanh Son requested.
It can be said that the commercial operation of Nhon Trach 3 and the upcoming Nhon Trach 4 power plants is a milestone in the LNG power sector in Vietnam. In addition to providing clean electricity, contributing to ensuring energy security, the project is also a testament to the Government's determination in energy transition and implementing the commitment to net zero emissions by 2050.
For Dong Nai, the first green power plant complex in Vietnam operating in the area partly affirms its potential and position as an important industrial and energy center of the Southern region. The province hopes to become a model for modern green power projects in the future, contributing to strengthening national energy security.
