Joys and sorrows follow the Tet flower season of the Year of the Horse (2016).

(DTO) This year's Tet flower crop has been affected by weather conditions, causing many flower fields to bloom prematurely. This has impacted consumption and prices. However, farmers whose flowers bloomed at the right time have been able to sell them at good prices and with good sales.

FLOWERS BLOOM EARLY, DIFFICULT TO SELL

In the last days of the twelfth lunar month, at My Phong Flower Village (My Phong Ward), traders from many places continue to come to buy flowers from farmers.

Mr. Nguyen Van Kim Dong (Hoi Gia neighborhood, My Phong ward) hurriedly pushes flowers from the field to load them onto the truck.

This Tet season, Mr. Nguyen Van Sau's family (My Hoa neighborhood) planted about 2,500 baskets of various flowers, including 1,000 baskets of Dutch chrysanthemums. By this time, his family has sold about 50% of the flowers. Mr. Sau shared: "This year, due to the weather, the Dutch chrysanthemums and pompom chrysanthemums bloomed early."

For Dutch chrysanthemums, I initially sold them for 130,000 VND per pair, then 120,000 VND per pair, and finally 100,000 VND per pair. I had to accept lower prices to sell the flowers.

"Currently, I still have about 200 pots of Dutch chrysanthemums and 70 pots of pompom chrysanthemums that haven't been sold yet. Several hundred pots of marigolds have already been sold, but the buyers haven't picked them up yet. This year, input costs have increased significantly, so I probably won't make much profit."

Mr. Thuan has sold all his Tet flowers.

In the days leading up to the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026, the atmosphere at flower and ornamental plant markets in Dong Thap province has become more bustling than ever. These markets are donning a vibrant "new look," becoming ideal destinations for locals and tourists alike to enjoy and shop.

According to the People's Committee of My Tra Ward, the My Tra Ward Spring Flower and Ornamental Plant Market for the Year of the Horse 2026 was organized on a scale of more than 900 stalls. From early morning, the atmosphere at the spring flower and ornamental plant market was extremely lively.

Mr. Bui Minh Sang (Tan Khanh Trung commune) enthusiastically introduced: "This Tet holiday, I'm focusing on selling Dutch and Korean chrysanthemum varieties with very vibrant colors."

Each pair of chrysanthemums costs around 400,000 VND. I hope everyone will show their enthusiastic support so that flower sellers like us can soon be reunited with our families.”

Meanwhile, in Dao Thanh ward, the Binh Ngo 2026 Spring Flower Market at Hung Vuong Square this year is organized on a scale of 500 stalls.

By the afternoon of the 24th day of the 12th lunar month, the demand for flowers and ornamental plants here was still slow. The prices of various flowers were similar to last year's Tet holiday.

Mr. Duong Van An, a farmer from Vinh Thanh commune, Vinh Long province, who has a stall selling bougainvillea bonsai at the spring flower market, said: “I haven't sold much these past few days. Compared to 2025, the price this year hasn't increased much. This year, the costs are high, so the profit isn't as good as last year.”

This year, for Tet (Lunar New Year), Nguyen Van Kim Dong (Hoi Gia neighborhood, My Phong ward) planted 1,200 pots of various flowers. “Compared to last year, Tet flowers are selling slower this year. Because the Dutch chrysanthemums bloomed early, they are difficult to sell, and traders aren't buying them. My family has 400 pots of early-blooming Dutch chrysanthemums.”

"Even with price reductions, there are no buyers. With this situation, I'd be happy if my family even broke even this year," Mr. Dong said sadly.

Mr. Truong Vinh Phat, a farmer with the largest area of Tet flower cultivation in Hoi Gia neighborhood, My Phong ward, said that by this time, his family has sold about 50% of their fresh flowers at the farm, and the price has decreased compared to last year.

Mr. Phat shared: “This year, I planted 21,000 flower baskets including: Thai rough chrysanthemums, yellow and red marigolds, red chrysanthemums, yellow chrysanthemums, daisies, sunflowers, cockscomb, etc.”

"This year, the weather has made the flowers bloom very quickly and beautifully. This year, traders are 'pressuring' farmers because they see an excessive amount of flowers blooming, so they've lowered prices significantly."

FLOWERS BLOOM AT THE RIGHT TIME FOR FAVORABLE CONSUMPTION

Besides the farmers who faced difficulties selling their flowers due to the early blooming of Tet flowers, those whose flowers bloomed at the right time had a smooth sales experience.

As one of the households that successfully grows chrysanthemums, with flowers blooming just in time for the Lunar New Year, Mr. Nguyen Van Trung (Dong Hue hamlet, Sa Dec ward) said that this year, his family planted 5,000 pots of various types of chrysanthemums to serve both the Gregorian New Year and the Lunar New Year.

Of those, the majority of the colored chrysanthemums had been pre-ordered by traders. As for the approximately 500 pots of traditional chrysanthemums, thanks to careful cultivation, the flowers bloomed at the right time.

From the 15th day of the 12th lunar month until now, he has sold all of his traditional chrysanthemum plants at a price of 150,000 - 160,000 VND per pot.

At the Tan An Ornamental Flower Cooperative, combining flower cultivation with tourism development has resulted in relatively smooth sales. According to Mr. Dang Quang Giau, head of the Tan An Ornamental Flower Cooperative, this year the cooperative planted approximately 200,000 flower baskets of various types, with chrysanthemums accounting for the majority.

The Tan An Flower and Ornamental Plant Cooperative has found it quite easy to sell Tet flowers thanks to combining flower cultivation with tourism development.

In addition to supplying flowers for the Flower and Ornamental Plant Festival at the end of December 2025, THT also promotes selling flowers on-site to visitors. When chrysanthemums bloom early, THT also assists in purchasing additional flowers from local farmers to meet the needs of tourists.

According to Mr. Giau, flower prices this year are similar to last year. Pots measuring 8-9 decimeters cost 100,000-110,000 VND/pot; while tall yellow chrysanthemums (over 1 meter) range from 130,000-140,000 VND/pot. Customers come from many provinces such as Gia Lai, Dak Lak, Kon Tum, etc.

This year, for the Lunar New Year season, Mr. Nguyen Huu Thuan's family (Hoi Gia neighborhood, My Phong ward) grew nearly 3,000 baskets of various flowers such as Dutch chrysanthemums, marigolds, and lucky bamboo, a decrease of more than 1,000 baskets compared to last year. By noon on the 24th day of the 12th lunar month, his family had sold all the flowers.

The flower and ornamental plant market in My Tra ward for the Lunar New Year of the Horse 2026 is starting to get busy.

Mr. Thuan shared: “Today, traders came and bought up all the flowers. Although the Dutch chrysanthemums bloomed a little early, the traders still bought them. However, the selling price of Dutch chrysanthemums is only about 110,000 VND/pair, a decrease of about 10,000 VND/pair compared to last year.”

"As for the prices of other types of flowers, they remain stable compared to last year. With this situation, my family made a profit from this flower season, but not as much as in previous years. The reason is the high increase in input costs."

According to Mr. Truong Van Nhung, head of the My Phong ornamental flower cooperative (formerly My Phong commune), this year his family planted about 20,000 flower pots of various types, mainly chrysanthemums, gerberas, and lucky bamboo…

Compared to last year, this year, Mr. Nhung's family planted a larger quantity of Korean and Dutch chrysanthemum varieties for the Lunar New Year. Mr. Nhung said that by this time, his family had sold all the flowers. The remaining flower baskets will be quickly picked up by traders.

For the Lunar New Year of 2026, farmers in My Phong Flower Village planted approximately 986,000 potted plants.

According to Le Thi Be Phuong, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairwoman of the People's Council of My Phong Ward, by the afternoon of the 24th day of the 12th lunar month, flower farmers in the ward had sold approximately 60% of the total quantity of Tet flowers.

This year, due to the weather, some areas of flowers bloomed early. In response to this situation, many organizations and individuals have provided support, helping to sell some of the early-blooming flowers for the people.

The reason is the slow purchasing power in the market. This year, generally speaking, the economic situation remains difficult, which has affected the consumption of Tet flowers. The volume of flowers sold this year is slow due to the sluggish purchasing power in some markets outside the province.

In some cases, traders did not purchase flowers from farmers as previously agreed. There were instances where traders had placed deposits to purchase flowers, but on the day of purchase, they only took a portion. On the other hand, areas where flowers did not bloom prematurely still sold at a good price.

From a local perspective, the ward will closely monitor the consumption of Tet flowers to provide timely support to farmers in case of any difficulties.

The local authorities will continue to mobilize businesses, organizations, and individuals in the area and surrounding regions to support farmers in selling their early-blooming flowers. In addition, the ward will continue to promote the sale of Tet flowers in markets outside the province…
