Officials from the functional sector took samples of surface water along the river and wastewater from production facilities in Chan May-Lang Co Economic Zone for testing.

Previously, on June 30, many people in Phu Hai village (Loc Vinh, Phu Loc) discovered that fish in the My Gia river near Lach Giang estuary had died en masse.

Most of them are small fish, such as silver pomfret, mackerel, brown fish, and goby. In fact, this phenomenon happened for the first time in the locality, so many people asked local leaders to petition the district and provincial departments and agencies to intervene because they suspected that the water source was polluted by production facilities in the Chan May-Lang Co economic zone discharging waste directly into the environment.

After the fish deaths occurred on My Gia River, the Department of Environmental Protection received information on July 1 and conducted measurements, monitoring, and collection of surface water samples along the river and wastewater output from the Centralized Wastewater Treatment Plant of the Industrial Park and Duty Free Zone in Chan May-Lang Co Economic Zone.

On July 3, the leader of the provincial Department of Environmental Protection informed that through the results of rapid measurements of surface water parameters at My Gia River, the surface water quality in the monitoring area has very low dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration parameters.

In particular, the section from the spillway to Phu Hai bridge may affect fish and aquatic life in the water environment. After the analysis results, the staff unit of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment continued to report to the Provincial People's Committee the results of surface water quality monitoring in the area where fish died.

Many sections of My Gia River are at high risk of water pollution.

The Department of Natural Resources and Environment recommends that the Provincial People's Committee direct the Phu Loc District People's Committee to assign the People's Committees of localities along the My Gia River to regularly monitor the environmental status and promptly inform if fish deaths occur. Collect the dead fish for treatment and do not let the fish decompose and cause bad odors in the dead fish area. The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development inspects and evaluates the dead fish situation to determine the cause of the fish deaths.

The leaders of the Department of Natural Resources and Environment also recommended that the Provincial People's Committee direct the Provincial Industrial Economic Zone Management Board to review the operations of production and business establishments operating in the Chan May Lang Co Economic Zone; request units to conduct preliminary treatment to meet standards and connect wastewater to the centralized wastewater treatment system; strictly handle units that do not comply with wastewater connection and discharge directly into receiving sources.
