According to the Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, by 2024, the area of fruit trees nationwide will reach more than 1.3 million hectares, of which the Mekong Delta has 414 thousand hectares, accounting for 32%, and the midlands and northern mountainous region has 275 thousand hectares, accounting for 21%.

To improve productivity, quality and income for people from growing fruit trees, many new varieties have been selected and transferred into production such as lychee, longan, orange, pineapple, mango... Technical solutions, advanced farming processes, climate change adaptation along with good agricultural practices, VietGAP and organic certification have been and are being widely implemented.

In addition, the country currently has 8,086 growing area codes and 1,597 packaging facility codes for fresh fruits exported to markets such as China, the United States, Australia, Korea, and Japan.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Phu Tho province, Bui Duy Linh: "Currently, the whole province has an area of nearly 36 thousand hectares of fruit trees, of which citrus trees (grapefruit, oranges, tangerines) are 16 thousand hectares, bananas are 6.7 thousand hectares, longan and lychee are 3.7 thousand hectares... Based on the planning of production areas, assessment of advantages and market demand, the province has paid attention to developing specialty fruit trees with high value such as: Doan Hung grapefruit, Tan Lac, Cao Phong oranges, Gia Thanh seedless persimmons, Hac Tri... Up to now, many concentrated fruit tree areas have been formed in the area, creating a premise for building raw material areas to serve domestic consumption and export".

In addition, Phu Tho province has so far granted 67 banana growing area codes, including 13 codes for export with an area of 357.7 hectares; 54 codes for domestic consumption with an area of 519 hectares and 3 facilities granted codes for banana packaging facilities exporting to China and the EU. In 2024, the packaging facility exported more than 2,900 tons of fresh bananas to the Chinese market.

Nowadays, more and more countries are setting strict technical barriers for imported agricultural products. Therefore, production towards food safety, traceability, production according to GAP process, with growing area codes... are necessary conditions for Vietnamese agricultural products in general, fruit trees in particular, to be exported to markets such as: EU, Japan, Korea...

Besides, the domestic demand for clean products with clear origins has also become urgent, and has been promoting fruit production in localities according to VietGAP and GlobalGAP processes...

Director of the National Agricultural Extension Center Le Quoc Thanh said: “Developing fruit tree production for domestic consumption and export still has a lot of potential because we are building large, concentrated raw material areas. In addition, units of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment are making efforts to find new markets to export agricultural products. However, to penetrate new markets, it is necessary to pay attention to the standards of the importing country on food safety and traceability.”

The Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection said that it is necessary to strengthen training and raise awareness of organizations and individuals about the regulations of importing countries; strengthen inspection and supervision of growing areas and packaging facilities according to regulations; communicate about the risks of heavy metal residues in the agricultural production process; propagate and disseminate the requirements of importing countries for agricultural products to garden owners; and properly implement market requirements on food safety and traceability, etc.
