Increase product competitiveness

According to reports from the Department of Agriculture and Environment and the City's Horticultural Association, after Typhoon Yagi (2024), 80-90% of banana plantations in the city were completely destroyed. Therefore, since the typhoon, banana prices have remained high. Previously, the average price for Cavendish bananas was only 15-20 thousand VND per bunch, and for Cavendish bananas 20-25 thousand VND per bunch. However, after Typhoon Yagi, the price of Cavendish bananas reached 25-30 thousand VND per bunch on normal days, and Cavendish bananas 35-40 thousand VND per bunch, with exceptionally beautiful bunches reaching hundreds of thousands of VND. Particularly during the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), the demand for bananas increased, causing prices to rise by more than 20-30%.

In Hai Phong market, in the days leading up to Tet (Lunar New Year), there is a wide variety of bananas available, including pink Cavendish bananas, South American Cavendish bananas, and plantains, sold in local markets, safe agricultural product stores, and supermarkets to serve consumers' Tet shopping needs. Bananas are imported from other provinces and cities, as well as from specialized banana-growing areas within the city such as Lien Khe, An Son, Tu Ky, and Chan Hung communes.

However, consumers still prefer to buy bananas produced in specialized banana-growing areas within the city, even though the selling price of these bananas is higher than that of bananas imported from other provinces and cities.

The difference stems from the fact that some specialized banana-growing areas in Hai Phong have long established a brand and reputation among customers for the quality and uniqueness of their products. For example, in the Tet banana growing area of Lien Khe commune, to produce bunches of bananas with curved, bright, and evenly shaped fruits, farmers meticulously care for them all year round in preparation for the year-end harvest. Local farmers carefully tie each bunch of bananas to prevent breakage, wrap them tightly in sacks to limit pests and diseases, protect against frost that can cause cracking, and help the fruit curve evenly, look bright, and fetch a good price.

In the banana-growing area of Tu Ky commune, the reason consumers always prefer locally grown bananas, besides the farmers' production experience, is partly due to the suitable soil conditions. The entire banana-growing area of over 100 hectares is located on the alluvial plain along the Luoc River, enriched by fertile soil, resulting in lush green trees year-round and sweet, fragrant ripe fruit. Therefore, this specialized banana-growing area not only supplies bananas for the Tet holiday in the city but also serves several businesses that process banana products.

Put all your effort into a bountiful harvest.

Although many banana plantations in specialized growing areas had to be completely replanted after Typhoon Yagi , by the 2025 production season, most trees in these specialized banana growing areas had recovered quickly and yielded high productivity, quality, and selling prices.

According to Nguyen Huy Chuan, Director of Lien Khe Cooperative, the banana crop for Tet 2024 was largely unharvested due to the impact of Typhoon Yagi. However, banana growers in the commune did not lose heart; they removed the old trees and replaced them with new varieties, while also devoting their efforts to tending the crop for this year's Tet season.

Banana growers are delighted during Tet (Lunar New Year) because their bananas are selling at high prices.

Mr. Tran Van Riu, residing in Hamlet 11, Lien Khe Commune, said that this Tet holiday, all 400 of his banana trees are bearing fruit. In previous years, each bunch of bananas only fetched 600,000 - 700,000 VND, but this year, traders came directly to the orchard to pre-order them at prices ranging from 1,000 to 1,500,000 VND per bunch. His family is very pleased because after harvesting the entire orchard and deducting expenses, they expect a profit of 300,000 - 400,000,000 VND. To achieve this success, he and his family diligently cared for the trees throughout 2025, ensuring they were protected from pests and diseases, especially yellow leaf disease.

In the specialized banana-growing area of Tu Ky commune, Mr. Nguyen Chi Quoc, Director of Ha Thanh Cooperative, said that local farmers commonly grow all three types of bananas: Cavendish, pink banana, and South American Cavendish. Because the planting area is on alluvial plains along the river, the 2025 flood release from hydroelectric dams caused high water levels, affecting the banana-growing region. However, banana growers promptly cared for and restored the flooded areas. Farmers not only cultivate bananas using traditional methods but also apply advanced techniques such as VietGAP and organic farming to ensure the quality of the growing areas for processing and export businesses.

In Chan Hung commune, although the banana plantations of local people are located within the Tien Lang airport planning area, the land has not yet been reclaimed in 2025, so the people are still putting their efforts into cultivating bananas for the Lunar New Year of the Horse on nearly 200 hectares in the alluvial plain along sea dike 1.

According to Pham Van Quyen, Director of the Nam Viet Cooperative, the entire area planted with bananas in the locality uses seedlings grown through tissue culture, resulting in fairly uniform quality of both the plants and the harvested fruit. Farmers know how to utilize the banana stems from the previous crop as fertilizer for the new season, along with applying balanced new-generation fertilizers, leading to high banana yields.

Having established a reputation for quality, banana products from the city's specialized banana-growing regions are always in high demand during the Lunar New Year season.
