"Hands-on guidance" in challenging areas.

With the motto "stay close to the villages, stay close to the people," the officers and soldiers of the 5th Economic-Defense Brigade have considered their stationed area as their second home. They not only carry out training and combat readiness duties but also directly participate in activities to help the people alleviate poverty, develop production, and build infrastructure. From inter-village roads and water supply systems to effective farming and livestock models, all bear the mark of the partnership between the soldiers and the people.

The 5th Economic -Defense Brigade distributed livestock to disadvantaged families in Tam Chung commune.

In areas with difficult conditions and backward production methods, the 5th Economic-Defense Brigade has sent officers to each village to provide guidance on farming techniques and the conversion to suitable crops and livestock. As a result, many households have gradually stabilized their lives and achieved sustainable incomes. Economic models such as afforestation, livestock farming, and the development of medicinal plants not only help people escape poverty but also contribute to protecting the ecological environment.

In Poong village, Tam Chung commune, a semi-wild farming model for indigenous pigs has been implemented to suit local conditions. Soldiers provided hands-on guidance, instructing on disease prevention and utilizing readily available feed sources; this model helps people increase their income steadily without requiring large capital investments. In Suoi Tut village, the unit supported the people in transitioning from slash-and-burn farming to wet rice cultivation; the small irrigation canal system was improved, along with guidance on planting techniques, resulting in a significant increase in rice yields and contributing to local food security.

In Kham village, Quang Chieu commune, the unit focused on building models for planting forestry and fruit trees. Along with providing seedlings, officers and soldiers guided the planting and care techniques, contributing to greening barren land and creating long-term livelihoods for the people. Not only did they support production, but in villages such as Tao in Trung Ly commune and Cang in Pu Nhi commune, the 5th Economic-Defense Brigade also effectively implemented activities to help people harvest crops, repair houses, and relocate from landslide-prone areas, contributing to stabilizing their lives. A common feature of these models is that they are all implemented according to the principle of "suitable for each village, close to each household," avoiding superficiality and formality. Officers and soldiers stayed close to the community, working alongside the people, thereby helping them change their perceptions and apply science and technology to production.

Mr. Lo Van Di from Poong village said: “The soldiers came to our house to guide us on how to raise pigs and how to prevent diseases. Before, the pigs often died, but now that we know how to take care of them, the herd is thriving. With the extra income, we feel more secure in our work. When there are floods and landslides, the soldiers come to help move houses, clean up, and repair. During the busy harvest season, the soldiers also come to help with harvesting rice.”

In 2025, the 5th Economic-Defense Brigade provided 243 breeding buffaloes and cows, and 192 breeding native black pigs to households in the area, and coordinated with local authorities to organize training courses and provide guidance on livestock farming and crop cultivation techniques.

Colonel Le Vinh, Commander of the 5th Economic-Defense Brigade, said: “The unit has coordinated and thoroughly understood the local area, the thoughts and aspirations of the people, maintained household economic models, and then trained and replicated them. At the same time, officers from the brigade eat, live, work, and speak the ethnic language with the people to encourage and help them develop their household economies.”

Beyond economic development, the unit also places special emphasis on civilian outreach. Officers and soldiers regularly coordinate with local authorities to disseminate legal information, encourage people to maintain security and order, and combat outdated customs. Literacy classes and free health care and medical examination programs have fostered trust and a deep bond between the military and the people. Using funds from the Ministry of National Defense , the unit has focused on building four cultural centers in villages belonging to Quang Chieu and Muong Chanh communes; constructing dams and irrigation canals in Can - Tan Huong village, Tam Chung commune; building roads in Pa Den - Hua Pu village, Pu Nhi commune; and building roads in Quan Dao - Poong village, Quang Chieu commune... Upon completion and commissioning, these programs and projects have proven effective, contributing to population stability, poverty reduction, and maintaining political security and social order in the border region.

Over the years of development and growth, the 5th Economic-Defense Brigade has affirmed its pivotal role in economic development linked to national defense and security. The image of soldiers embodying the "three together" principle—eating together, living together, and working together—has become familiar to the people. This closeness and dedication have contributed to strengthening the "people's support," creating a solid foundation for the task of protecting border sovereignty.
