Notice from Cambodia to the Organizing Committee of SEA Games 33.

Cambodia confirmed that it will only compete in 13 sports at the 33rd SEA Games. This sudden move leaves Group A of men's football with only two teams, Thailand and Timor Leste, forcing the organizing committee to consider the possibility of re-drawing the groups.

According to a notice from the Cambodian Olympic Committee sent to the SEA Games Organizing Committee on the evening of November 26, the country decided to withdraw from the following sports: judo, karate, pencak silat, petanque, wrestling, wushu, football and sepak takraw – after previously withdrawing from billiards and muay Thai. The reason given was “concerns for the safety of athletes and officials”, although Cambodia still committed to participating in some remaining sports.

Cambodia will only send troops to the 2025 SEA Games in 13 sports including swimming, athletics, Esports, fencing, gymnastics, jiu-jitsu, kickboxing, taekwondo, horse riding, jet ski, triathlon, teqball and volleyball.

Mr. Thana Chaiprasit – Head of the Thai Sports Delegation, said that this decision came too suddenly, because there was no warning sign. Cambodian media even reported that about 300 athletes received encouragement from the Sports Minister. The withdrawal of mainly team sports, leaving the number of Cambodian athletes expected to be under 100, is said to make security work easier to control.

However, the removal of men's football has significantly changed the competition landscape. With only Thailand and Timor Leste remaining in Group A, the SEA Games Organizing Committee will have to consider adjusting the format or redrawing the entire group stage. This decision is expected to be reviewed in the next few days.
