According to the Phnom Penh Post, the Cambodian Ministry of Health recently announced a plan to provide free medical and emergency services to athletes at the 32nd SEA Games and 12th ASEAN Para Games.
Accordingly, 7 major hospitals in the country and 4 provincial hospitals, as well as more than 800 medical staff have been planned to thoroughly prepare for this event.
The 32nd SEA Games is expected to attract a large number of Cambodians as well as international visitors to event venues in the capital Phnom Penh and the provinces of Siem Reap, Preah Sihanouk, Kampot and Kep, the Cambodian Ministry of Health said.
Therefore, to protect the health of attendees and provide emergency care to people experiencing medical emergencies during the upcoming event, the Cambodian Ministry of Health is coordinating with relevant agencies to plan to increase operations with the participation of some private medical facilities.
Cambodia’s frontline health facilities prepared for this option include National Techo Santepheap Hospital, Calmette Hospital, Cambodia-China Preah Kossamak Friendship Hospital, Khmer-Soviet Union Friendship Hospital, Cambodia National Children’s Hospital, Preah Ang Duong Hospital, National Center for Maternal and Child Health; along with four provincial hospitals in Siem Reap, Preah Sihanouk, Kampot and Kep.
A total of 833 medical professionals (457 in Phnom Penh), 114 ambulances (72 in Phnom Penh), 9 mobile clinics (6 in Phnom Penh) and 11 medical tents (7 in Phnom Penh) will be prepared for the above plan.
Cambodian Health Minister Mam Bun Heng said medical and emergency services will be provided free of charge to those in need at designated locations, and there will be QR codes and hotlines to assist people.
"We will update the locations of medical and emergency services according to the actual situation. We hope that the people will cooperate with the relevant agencies in the most responsible manner," Mr. Mam Bun Heng emphasized.
This is the latest step in Cambodia's efforts to host a "free SEA Games" in its first time hosting the tournament.
Previously, on April 18, more than two weeks before the opening ceremony of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 32), host country Cambodia decided not to charge food and accommodation fees for sports delegations competing at this event.
The decision was made at a meeting held on the same day of the National Organizing Committee for the 32nd SEA Games and the 12th Southeast Asian Games for the Disabled (ASEAN Para Games 12) of Cambodia (CAMSOC-CAMAPGOC) chaired by Samdech Tea Banh, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defense of Cambodia and Chairman of CAMSOC-CAMAPGOC, and Cambodian Minister of Tourism and Permanent Vice Chairman of CAMSOC-CAMAPGOC Thong Khon, along with leaders of the specialized departments of the organizing committee of the games.
Speaking after the meeting, CAMSOC-CAMAPGOC Secretary General Vath Chamroeun said that the meeting members received recommendations from the CAMSOC-CAMAPGOC Chairman, conveying the direction of Cambodian Prime Minister Samdech Techo Hun Sen on the above policy.
Sports delegations from Southeast Asian countries will not have to pay the $50/person/day accommodation and food service fee to host Cambodia at the upcoming games.
The Kingdom of Cambodia will host the 32nd SEA Games with 37 sports and the 12th ASEAN Para Games with 13 sports, taking place in May and June respectively.
The historic sporting event, which has been awaited for 64 years by the people of this Southeast Asian country, is expected to attract over 11,000 members of sports delegations to compete.
With the slogan "Sports - Living in peace," the 32nd SEA Games took place from May 5-17 in the capital Phnom Penh and four other localities including Siem Reap, Preah Sihanouk, Kampot and Kep.
