Google is planning to launch its first foldable Pixel before announcing its flagship Pixel 8 in October, according to sources familiar with the matter who spoke to CNBC. The device, codenamed “Felix,” is said to have the most durable hinge of any foldable smartphone. The Pixel Fold is also water-resistant and features a compact, pocket-sized design.
But these are just rumors about the Pixel Fold. On April 22, Android researcher Kuba Wojciechowski posted a video of Google's first foldable device prototype. In the video, the smartphone does not have Google's own signature signs such as the company logo or the rear camera cluster.
Instead, the video only shows the front part containing the selfie camera, the inner bezel, and the curved folding screen at the four corners. According to The Verge, this prototype could be completely mistaken for a Samsung foldable device.
Sharing with the news site, famous leaker Kuba Wojciechowski said he has been following this product for many months. He confirmed that this is Pixel Fold and the video was filmed more than a month ago.
According to sources revealed to CNBC, the Pixel Fold will cost around $1,700-1,800, equivalent to the price of the Galaxy Z Fold 4. The highlights of this device are the 5.8-inch outer screen, 7.6-inch folding screen along with a durable hinge.

Images obtained by CNBC show that the Pixel Fold looks like a folded book, weighing about 280 grams, heavier than the Galaxy Z Fold 4. In return, Google's first foldable device has a larger battery, which can last for 24 hours continuously or 72 hours if low power mode is turned on. The Pixel Fold is said to use the Tensor G2 processor, which appeared on the Pixel 7/7 Pro last year.
According to CNBC, the Pixel Fold is the most expensive smartphone in Google's Pixel flagship line. The technology group has researched software for foldable devices, from customizing the Android operating system to the Google Play Store app store.
But the Pixel Fold will be a chance for Google to show off all the potential its smartphones can do. For example, Pixel smartphones currently have quite a few exclusive features that other Android phones don't have, such as the ability to edit images thanks to the Tensor processor.
Users who want to buy Pixel Fold in the US market will also have the option of exchanging their old phone for a new one. Google will buy back both Android smartphones and iPhones if users want to switch to using Pixel Fold. The company also gives away a Pixel Watch with every Pixel Fold purchase.
The Pixel Fold leak also comes as Google and Samsung’s partnership appears to be fraying. Alphabet shares fell more than 3.5% on news that Samsung would change its smartphone search engine to Microsoft’s Bing instead of Google, a feature that generates nearly $3 billion in annual revenue for Google.
