The tourism potential of Muong Hum needs to be "awakened".

Located on the western slopes of the Hoang Lien Son mountain range, Muong Hum commune boasts many outstanding attractions such as Pu Ta Leng peak, Ky Quan San, Dragon Waterfall, and the ancient Pavie stone road. Besides its majestic scenery, it also preserves the unique cultural values of various ethnic groups: Ha Nhi, Mong, Dao, Giay… and many traditional festivals dating back thousands of years. However, despite its great potential, tourism in Muong Hum is still in its "starting" stage.

It's no coincidence that trekkers often call Muong Hum "the path to legendary mountain peaks." From here, visitors can conquer Pu Ta Leng peak – the "second highest peak" in Indochina, or Ky Quan San peak, considered a "cloud-hunting paradise" in Vietnam. The trails through forests, across streams, and through pristine vegetation have become a major attraction for adventure travelers .

Besides its mountains and forests, Muong Hum also boasts a system of waterfalls, streams, and terraced rice fields stretching along the mountain slopes. Dragon Waterfall, with its water cascading from a great height amidst a pristine landscape, has the potential to become a tourism symbol of Muong Hum if properly invested in.

Besides natural resources, the cultural values of the indigenous people in Muong Hum are also a special "asset." This area is home to ethnic groups such as the Mong, Dao, Ha Nhi, and Giay, with customs, festivals, and traditional crafts still preserved quite intact. Furthermore, the Muong Hum Sunday market is not only a place for exchanging goods but also a vibrant cultural space.

In particular, another important advantage is its regional connectivity. On the Sa Pa - Y Tý - Lũng Pô tourist route, Mường Hum can become an ideal stopover point, contributing to extending the journey and length of stay for tourists visiting Lào Cai .

Ms. Luc Thi Thanh, a tourist from Bao Ha commune who participated in the Muong Hum - Pu Ta Leng mountain climbing trip in early spring of 2026, shared: "We spent almost half a day traveling from Lao Cai ward to the center of Muong Hum commune to reach the starting point for conquering Pu Ta Leng. The road from Ban Vuoc up to Ban Xeo - Muong Hum is narrow, with many steep curves and landslides, making the journey difficult and longer than expected."

“The scenery in Muong Hum is incredibly beautiful and majestic, but the road is quite difficult and lacks support services,” shared Mr. Nguyen Minh Tuan, a tourist from Hanoi , after completing his journey experiencing the ancient Pavie stone road.

"If there were more signposts, professional guide services, and more resorts on-site, the experience would be much better. I really enjoyed the local culture, but it was difficult to find information about the destination and there weren't many accommodation options to stay longer," added Mr. Tuan.

Many tourists share the same opinion: Muong Hum is beautiful and has great potential, but lacks comprehensive investment in infrastructure, accommodation, and services. Transportation infrastructure is the biggest obstacle. The roads from Lao Cai, Sa Pa, or Y Ty to Muong Hum are still difficult to navigate, with many landslides posing a danger. Access to Dragon Waterfall or trekking routes like Pu Ta Leng and Ky Quan San also remains challenging.

In addition, accommodation options in Muong Hum are limited. The entire commune only has 8 establishments, mostly small homestays, which do not meet the diverse needs, especially of international tourists or high-end resort guests.

Furthermore, despite having many attractive destinations, Muong Hum has not yet developed interconnected tourism routes, sites, and programs, while the local tourism workforce is also insufficient and lacks skills. Local people have not received adequate training in service, communication, and management, resulting in inconsistent service quality. Therefore, tourists often have to organize their own itineraries, lacking professional all-inclusive tour packages.

Moreover, there is limited promotion of tourist destinations in Muong Hum. Compared to Sa Pa or Mu Cang Chai, Muong Hum remains a relatively unknown name.

Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Minh, Chairman of the People's Committee of Muong Hum commune, said: “We have identified tourism as a sector that will contribute significantly to the socio-economic development of the commune in the coming time. However, due to difficult economic conditions, investment in transportation infrastructure, accommodation facilities, and services is not yet synchronized. The locality is gradually completing the planning, calling on businesses to participate in investment and supporting people to participate in tourism. The overarching principle is sustainable development, linked with cultural preservation and environmental protection.”

13.png

Overall, for tourism in Muong Hum to truly "awaken," a comprehensive and long-term development strategy is needed. First and foremost is infrastructure, as upgrading inter-regional connecting roads and access roads to tourist destinations should be a top priority. Next, investment in basic tourism infrastructure such as accommodation, parking, tours, routes, and check-in points is crucial. This is a key factor determining the visitor experience.

Regarding tourism products, Muong Hum should focus on leveraging its unique advantages. Trekking routes like Pu Ta Leng and Ky Quan San, and exploring Dragon Waterfall, could be developed into professional adventure tourism products; combined with cultural experiences such as staying in homestays, participating in local markets, and learning handicrafts… to help extend the length of stay for tourists.

Furthermore, community-based tourism is a suitable direction. Supporting local people in renovating their homes into homestays, developing local cuisine and handicrafts will create sustainable livelihoods while preserving cultural identity.

An indispensable element is human resources. Training programs in tour guide skills, foreign languages, and accommodation management need to be implemented regularly. Local people are the most important "tourism ambassadors" of the locality, so they need to be equipped with knowledge and communication skills.

Mr. Pham Cao Vy, Chairman of the Lao Cai Tourism Association, commented: “If Sa Pa is strong in resorts, and Y Ty stands out for ‘cloud hunting’ and exploring villages, then Muong Hum can position itself as a trekking destination, a place to organize adventure sports combined with experiencing traditional crafts. The important thing is to build unique products with their own stories, and at the same time, to boost promotion on digital platforms and social media… The stories about the nature, culture, and people here need to be told in an engaging and consistent way.”

This is an achievable goal, but it requires determination and the right approach. From a region still relatively untouched by tourism, Muong Hum is on the verge of transformation. If the right solutions are found, Muong Hum could absolutely become a shining spot on the national and international tourism map.
