Can Tho promotes innovation towards Net Zero goal

In the context of increasingly severe climate change and the need to transform the development model towards sustainable green, Can Tho is identifying innovation as the key driving force on the journey to implement the commitment to net zero emissions by 2050. This is not only a national goal but also an opportunity for localities and businesses to restructure the growth model and improve competitiveness in the green economic era.

Applying science and technology - The key to shortening the journey to Net Zero

As the economic, scientific and technological center of the Mekong Delta region, Can Tho has implemented many policies to support businesses in technological innovation, promote intellectual property and apply ecological, circular and organic agricultural production models.

Initiatives such as reducing methane emissions in rice production, building value chains, developing high-quality raw material areas and applying smart technology have created a clear change in increasing the value of local agricultural products.

Despite having a certain foundation, most businesses in Can Tho, especially small and medium-sized ones, still face financial and human resource difficulties in accessing new technology. According to the Department of Science and Technology of Can Tho, this is an inevitable trend that high-emission sectors such as agriculture , industry, construction, transportation, etc. are forced to implement a circular economic model and apply green technology if they want to meet international standards in the supply chain.

Intellectual property is both the result and the input resource of the innovation process. Recognizing this role, Can Tho has recently issued many policies to encourage the creation, protection and exploitation of intellectual property.

During the 2015-2024 period, the city had 4,859 accepted intellectual property applications, including 116 patent applications and 12 utility solutions, reflecting the growing interest of the scientific and business communities.

Within the framework of the Science and Technology Program serving the Net Zero target for the Mekong Delta, 30% of tasks must have an accepted intellectual property registration application. This is a pressure but also a motivation for businesses to boldly invest in research and development, and commercialization of green technology solutions.

Green innovation startups: Opportunities from global investment trends

According to a survey by PwC, more than 75% of global investors are prioritizing capital investment in businesses that meet ESG criteria. This positive signal opens up great opportunities for Can Tho's green startup ecosystem, where each year there are over 100 projects/ideas, of which 30% are startups focusing on environmental protection solutions, high-tech agriculture, and climate technology. Many models have left their mark, such as: Abavina Natural Farming Community, Seed Armor project, IoT eel farming water management system, etc.

Can Tho is aiming to develop an open innovation platform for green startups to connect businesses, investment funds, experts, and international organizations, thereby shortening the path from idea to market.

According to the World Bank, Vietnam needs an additional $368 billion by 2040 to achieve a sustainable development path and net zero emissions. The decarbonization journey alone accounts for about 30% of these resources. However, the domestic green finance market is still in its infancy.

To solve the resource problem, Can Tho has determined to promote international cooperation, mobilize private investment, develop green financial markets and carbon markets. This is expected to be an important "capital channel" for projects on emission reduction, green transformation and technological innovation.

The 4.0 industrial revolution is creating a strong shift, placing science, technology and innovation at the center of the new development model. For Can Tho, the application and transfer of green technology, promotion of intellectual property, development of green startups and green financial cooperation will be the levers to create a circular economy and enhance the city's competitiveness in the coming period.

According to the Department of Science and Technology of Can Tho, in the coming time, the city will prioritize the selection of scientific tasks aimed at emission reduction technologies in smart agriculture, sustainable transportation, waste recycling management, carbon capture storage technology, etc. At the same time, it will continue to support the green creative startup ecosystem, creating a favorable environment for businesses to develop, contributing to the Net Zero target of the locality and Vietnam.
