Be cautious about summer diseases.

Summer – when children are on school break and have more outdoor activities – is also the time when infectious diseases in children increase. Dr. Luu Que Chi, Head of the Pediatric Quality Management Department at the 315 Children's Hospital System, guides families and children on how to prepare their "armor" to welcome a safe summer.

Hot, humid summers with frequent rain create "ideal conditions" for bacteria and viruses to thrive. Children often suffer from diseases such as dengue fever, hand, foot and mouth disease, respiratory infections (sore throat, bronchitis), diarrhea, digestive disorders, encephalitis, and meningitis. Dr. Luu Que Chi, Head of the Pediatric Quality Management Department at the 315 Children's Hospital System, stated: Children are a top priority group that must receive full and timely vaccinations. Because children's immune systems are still weak and easily susceptible to illness, vaccination offers clear benefits: reducing the risk of disease, minimizing severity, and reducing complications if they do contract a disease. It also saves on healthcare costs because diseases are preventable.

Dr. Luu Que Chi concluded: Simply put, full vaccination is like "putting on armor" for children before entering the epidemic season.

During a dengue fever outbreak, should we vaccinate our children or wait until the outbreak is over?

Dr. Luu Que Chi: Not only for the Dengue Fever vaccine, but for all types of vaccines, it is recommended to follow the vaccination schedule, without waiting for the epidemic to end. If vaccination is delayed due to an epidemic, children may simultaneously face many other health risks. Vaccination should only be postponed when: The child has health problems such as a high fever or an acute illness, or there is a specific indication from the doctor.

If parents notice their child has a fever, should they give the child fever-reducing medication on their own or should they take the child to the doctor?

Dr. Luu Que Chi: Nowadays, almost every family medicine cabinet has fever-reducing medication, but not all parents know how to use it safely and effectively. Parents can give their children fever-reducing medication at home to alleviate discomfort caused by fever. However, home use should follow a doctor's instructions. In addition to medication, parents should combine it with other fever-reducing methods such as: wiping with cool water, drinking plenty of fluids, and dressing their children in loose, comfortable clothing…

Paracetamol is a common and preferred fever reducer for children due to its relative safety. However, parents should note: Use the correct dosage according to weight, do not combine multiple medications without consulting a doctor, and avoid continuous overuse. Most importantly, fever is only a symptom, not a disease. Parents should take their children to a pediatrician for examination and proper diagnosis of the child's condition.

According to doctors, instead of worrying too much about summer diseases, what proactive measures can we take?

Dr. Luu Que Chi: To proactively prevent diseases and epidemics that frequently appear in the summer, parents should ensure their children receive all necessary vaccinations; maintain hygiene in food and living environment; closely monitor for any unusual signs in children; and when children show signs of illness, take them to a medical facility – this is always the safest option.

Currently, the 315 Pediatric Health System and 315 Vaccination Center proudly offer a diverse range of vaccines, providing comprehensive health protection for children and the community.

The Ministry of Health has just licensed the distribution of a vaccine against hand, foot, and mouth disease caused by the EV71 virus, indicated for children from 2 months to under 6 years old. This is the first time Vietnam has had a hand, foot, and mouth disease vaccine. The hand, foot, and mouth disease vaccine will soon be available at the 315 Children's Health System and 315 Vaccination Center to help protect the health of Vietnamese children.
