Currently, Vietnam's seaport system consists of 34 ports. Of the 30 ports that can receive ships with a tonnage larger than their design, 13 ports have berths that have been approved by the Ministry of Transport to receive large tonnage ships. Notably, the number of ships with a tonnage larger than their design in areas with approved berths has increased significantly over the past 5 years, from more than 4,500 in 2019 to nearly 5,500 in 2023. Maritime security fees and tonnage fees at maritime ports that receive large tonnage ships also increased from nearly VND 2,800 billion in 2019 to VND 3,450 billion in 2023.

Vietnam Maritime Administration recommends that localities have clear plans and projects, and that businesses and associations continue to provide feedback to state management agencies to have safe and appropriate plans to receive ships, limiting the risk of ships running aground, drifting, colliding, etc.
