Forest Fires – Consequences of People's Carelessness

According to the forecast of the Hydrometeorological Station, the weather will continue to be extremely hot and dry for a long time. Many forests are at high risk of fire. Tay Ninh currently has more than 72,000 hectares of forests of all kinds, which are at level V fire risk warning - extremely dangerous.

According to statistics from the authorities, since the beginning of the dry season, there have been 6 forest fires in the province with an area of over 40,000 square meters. In addition to objective causes such as hot weather, subjective factors due to uncontrolled human activities using fire are the main cause of some forest fires.

For example, two forest fires occurred on March 20th on the slopes of Phung Mountain and in Section 2 of the Cultural and Historical Forest of Ba Mountain, which were suspected to have been caused by people using fire to catch bees. The two fires did not cause any damage to people or property, but burned and scorched people's fruit trees. In the natural forest, the main combustible materials were pothos vines and thorns, and there were no trees, so they did not damage forest resources.

According to Mr. Lam Van Thanh - Head of the Forest Protection Team, under the Management Board of the National Tourist Area of Ba Den Mountain, as soon as the fire was reported, the unit quickly mobilized forces, requested maximum support from specialized forces as well as mobilized local authorities and people, businesses to participate in fire fighting. Due to the rugged rocky terrain, many vines and thorns, accessing the scene and bringing water to put out the fire was very difficult.

After more than 24 hours of fighting the "fire", the two fires on Phung mountainside and area 2 were extinguished.

“The unit always strengthens inspections and prepares measures to prevent and fight forest fires. However, to effectively prevent forest fires, we hope that people living around the mountain area and gardeners will not use fire during the dry season when going to the forest. Tourists must also limit the use of fire during this dry season,” said Mr. Lam Van Thanh.

Lieutenant Colonel Huynh Ngoc Hieu - Deputy Head of the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Department, Provincial Police, advised: "Currently, Tay Ninh is in the dry season, the forests are at an extremely dangerous fire warning level, people - especially forest owners - must be very careful, to prevent cases of entering the forest to light fires to catch bees, leading to forest fires".

Proactive fire prevention, ready to fight fire

Implementing the motto "Prevention is the key, fire fighting must be timely, urgent and effective", the Provincial People's Committee requested units and localities to actively review and deploy many urgent measures to prevent and fight forest fires in key areas; at the same time, step up propaganda work, raise awareness of people and forest owners to strictly comply with State regulations on forest protection.

Ms. Tran Thi Ngan Ha - Head of Tay Ninh Forest Protection Department said: "We are implementing the general forest fire prevention and fighting plan of the whole province, in which prevention is determined to be the most important in the current period; at the same time, strictly implementing the 4 on-site motto, early detecting forest fires and promptly extinguishing them, not letting the fire spread".

To prevent forest fires and minimize the damage caused by forest fires, Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Thanh Ngoc requested the People's Committees of districts, towns, cities, heads of relevant agencies and units, forest owners according to their assigned functions and tasks to continue to promote propaganda to raise awareness and responsibility of forest owners, organizations, individuals, businesses and people, especially organizations and individuals who are contracted to cultivate, live and operate in forest areas to prevent violations of forest management and protection leading to forest fires. Promote fire warning measures, when detecting a fire, promptly notify the competent authorities to handle it, do not let the fire spread widely; strictly handle organizations and individuals who violate regulations on forest fire prevention and control according to the law.

To effectively prevent forest fires, protect resources and the ecological environment in the area, along with the participation of authorities, each person needs to raise awareness, be proactive in fire prevention and fighting, and promptly handle fires when they are detected.
