Police shoot down fan before Poland-Netherlands match

According to ESPN , Hamburg police shot dead a fan who was threatening people with an axe just hours before the match between Poland and the Netherlands in Group D of Euro 2024.

“He clearly tried to intimidate and then approached a number of people, including police officers with an axe in his hand, and the police officers were forced to open fire.

We consider this an isolated case, meaning there is no connection to football… I don't see any threat or any impact on today's match," Hamburg police spokeswoman Sandra Levgruen said.

Mr Levgruen added that the police still do not know the identity or motive of the suspect and are investigating the incident. According to another Hamburg police spokesman, the suspect was hospitalized after being shot in the leg. Fortunately, no other people were injured in the incident.

According to Bild , the suspect had a flammable bottle in his backpack, similar to a petrol bomb, which he intended to throw at the crowd. Therefore, the police had to open fire and shoot the suspect to avoid a bad situation. Hundreds of riot police then appeared around the area, and the Reeperbahn was also blocked.

To ensure security for Euro 2024, host country Germany has deployed 22,000 police officers to work every day. 200 officers are on duty near the scene, along with federal police who are always on high alert throughout the tournament to avoid the risk of violence and terrorism.
