According to Yonhap news agency, on July 2, the Korean National Police Agency (NPA) said it will provide interpretation services on its emergency hotline for foreign citizens.

The service opened on July 3. The NPA has two English interpreters and two Chinese interpreters at the situation room in Seoul to handle calls from foreigners.

The NPA hopes to better serve foreign nationals residing in Korea following the stampede in Seoul’s Itaewon neighborhood last fall. The incident claimed the lives of 26 foreigners, but none of the 93 calls to the hotline were made by foreigners. Previously, the Korea Tourism Organization also provided interpretation services for foreigners who called the police.

NPA plans to release videos and distribute flyers at major airports, train stations, and foreign embassies and consulates to promote the interpretation service. After evaluating the effectiveness of these services and the demand for interpretation in other languages, NPA will explore expanding the service to other languages.
