TV stations refused to replay Ilic's collision. |
In the 28th minute at Wembley, Bukayo Saka opened the scoring for England after a good combination. But in the 36th minute, the atmosphere in the stadium became tense after Serbia midfielder Ivan Ilic suffered a serious injury.
According to Athletic , Ilic appeared to be in a lot of pain near the Serbia penalty area after a collision and immediately needed medical help. Both the referee and England striker Marcus Rashford quickly signaled for a doctor to come on the field.
The incident was so serious that ITV decided not to replay the collision. Commentator Sam Matterface said on live TV: “We have looked at it but we don’t feel it is appropriate to replay it. It was quite a serious injury.”
Ilic was forced off the pitch shortly afterwards, replaced by Aleksandar Stankovic. Although he was able to stand up and limp off the pitch with the help of the Serbian medical team, the injury was still considered a concern.
After the match, Serbia said they would conduct a thorough examination of Ilic's injury and have not yet made a prediction about its severity.
In addition to Saka, Eberechi Eze was the one who sealed the 2-0 score for England against Serbia. This was just a formality match for the “Three Lions” as the team had already secured a ticket to the 2026 World Cup in the previous round.
