According to TechRadar , Canon has just announced a new full-frame sensor with a resolution of up to 410 megapixels (MP), an unprecedented breakthrough in image sensor technology. With parameters of 24,592 x 16,704 pixels, this sensor achieves a resolution equivalent to 24K, far exceeding all previous standards.
According to Canon's announcement, this sensor allows for 410 MP photos at 8 frames per second (fps). Even when using the pixel binning function to reduce the resolution to 100 megapixels, the shooting speed can increase to 24 fps.
Canon's new 410 MP sensor will initially be used in specialized devices for industrial, surveillance and medical needs.
However, Canon is not targeting this product to consumers, but rather to the industrial, surveillance and medical sectors. With its superior resolution, the sensor allows users to crop images in detail while maintaining high quality - which is extremely important in applications that require high precision.
Previously, Sony's 247-megapixel sensor, which was announced in 2024, made a strong impression. However, Sony's product was a medium-format sensor with a larger size, lower resolution, and processing speed that could not compare to Canon's 410-MP stacked sensor.
Currently, high-end consumer full-frame cameras like the Leica SL3 or Sony A7R V only stop at 61 megapixel sensors. These sensors also do not have stacked technology, making them inferior in both speed and detail.
Canon has been pushing the envelope in camera technology recently, including in-camera image upscaling in cameras like the EOS R5 Mark II. With this feature, image resolution can increase from 45 MP to 180 MP. If this upscaling technology is integrated with the new 410 MP sensor, the image resolution can reach an impressive 1.64 gigapixels.
It’s still a long way off that 410MP sensors will make their way into consumer cameras. Practical applications like surveillance and medical will continue to be the main priority, while mainstream users will have to wait for technological improvements that can be transferred in the future.
