The 10 trillion VND Hoa Binh – Moc Chau expressway: Striving to finish one year ahead of schedule and set a record for cable-stayed bridges.

The Hoa Binh – Moc Chau expressway project, worth 10,000 billion VND, aims for completion by the end of 2027. The project includes the Hoa Son bridge, which boasts the longest cable-stayed bridge span in Vietnam.

The 10 trillion VND expressway project has had its completion date shortened by one year.

The Hoa Binh – Moc Chau Expressway project (section from Km19+000 to Km53+000) is a key transportation project in the Northwest region with a total length of 34km. With a total investment of nearly 10,000 billion VND in phase 1, the project not only plays a role in connecting different regions but also opens up new opportunities for socio -economic development in the northern mountainous area.

Following directives from the People's Committee of Phu Tho province, the investor and contractors are focusing all available resources to complete the project before December 31, 2027. This goal shortens the project timeline by one year compared to the original plan (2028), closely adhering to the decisive directives from the Prime Minister.

Impressive progress in land clearance and disbursement.

As of January 2026, land clearance for the project has reached approximately 97%. Simultaneously, the disbursement rate for 2025 also reached 97% of the planned target. To take advantage of favorable weather conditions, construction units have worked around the clock, maintaining the pace even during holidays and Tet (Lunar New Year).

When completed, the road will connect the Hoa Binh area (now part of Phu Tho province) with the Moc Chau plateau (Son La province), creating a strategic transportation axis linking Hanoi with the Northwestern provinces. The project will significantly shorten travel time, reduce congestion on National Highway 6, and ensure traffic safety in the hilly and mountainous region prone to landslides.

Hoa Son Bridge: Holds the record for the longest cable-stayed bridge in Vietnam.

In the overall project, the Hoa Son Bridge is the most important component and is considered the "bottleneck" that determines the progress of the entire route. Construction began in April 2025, and the bridge has a total length (including approach roads) of over 1km. Notably, the main span of the bridge is 550m long, setting a record as the longest cable-stayed bridge span in Vietnam today.

Currently, the construction units are focusing on the foundations of the main towers P8 and P9. This is the most complex technical core, with each foundation consisting of 45 bored piles, 2.3m in diameter and driven up to 82m deep into the ground. Due to the area's unique hard rock geology, each bored pile takes 4-5 days to complete.

Technical challenges and flood control targets for 2026

Engineer Nguyen Dinh Dai, representing the Hoa Son bridge construction unit, said the biggest challenge in 2026 is raising the bridge abutments above the highest water level before the Hoa Binh hydroelectric plant begins impounding water. A team of over 200 officials and workers are currently working continuously in two shifts, day and night, with high concentration to meet the flood deadline.

Besides the Hoa Son bridge, other components along the route are also being accelerated:

  • The elevated bridge at Km44+906: 360m long with 12 spans, construction is being carried out in 3 continuous shifts, and is expected to be fully completed by October 2026.
  • Section from Km45+700 to Km50+200: Construction output has reached 15% after 6 months of implementation.

The Hoa Binh – Moc Chau expressway is expected to create a strong impetus to attract investment in high-tech agriculture, ecotourism, and renewable energy for the Northwest region, helping highland specialty agricultural products access larger consumer markets more quickly.

Note: Project information may change due to planning adjustments by relevant authorities. Investors and residents should verify the legal status and actual progress at the time of transaction.
