Last night (August 5), Quang Ninh had very heavy thunderstorms, strong winds and fierce waves at sea. At 10 p.m., the Van Don Special Zone Medical Center received an urgent report from the Thang Loi Commune Health Station about a pregnant woman named BTA (29 years old, first pregnancy, 37 weeks and 2 days) who was in labor, had severe abdominal pain, suspected of having an abnormal fetal position - high risk of difficult labor, unable to give birth normally at the commune level.
Thang Loi Island is more than 22 nautical miles (nearly 40km) from the center of Van Don Special Economic Zone. At this time, there was heavy rain, continuous thunder and lightning, high waves and strong winds of level 6-7. However, as soon as the information was received, the Medical Center arranged specialized rescue boats with full emergency equipment from outside hospitals, ready to cross the sea to the island to pick up patients in dangerous weather conditions.

At 11pm, a rescue team of 4 members and a rescue boat operator - who has many years of experience in maritime rescue - set out for the island in unprecedentedly harsh weather conditions.
At nearly 1am on August 6, the rescue boat safely reached the island. The team coordinated with Thang Loi Medical Station to conduct a quick examination and diagnosed that the pregnant woman needed an emergency cesarean section.
Faced with the critical situation, the emergency team decided to take the pregnant woman back to the Center by boat, while performing emergency interventions on the way to closely monitor the condition of the mother and fetus.

Nearly 1 hour later, the mother was safely taken to the Medical Center and doctors performed an emergency cesarean section. The baby girl weighed 2.4 kg and was born healthy, crying well. Currently, the health of both mother and child is stable, and they are being monitored and given postpartum care at the Center.
“In the middle of the night, in heavy rain and strong winds, every decision had to take into account the safety of both mother and child, as well as the entire team. But with all our experience, sense of responsibility and smooth coordination, we did it. The joy of a healthy baby crying out is the greatest reward for the medical team,” Dr. Bui Thanh Tuan, Head of the Department of Reproductive Health Care and Obstetrics, Head of the emergency team, emotionally shared.
