Carrick confronts the 'punishment army' from the Amorim era.

As Michael Carrick gradually establishes himself and prepares to become Manchester United's permanent manager, fans are eagerly waiting to see who he will leave out of his plans.

Carrick will have to face the "punishment army".

A naturally calm individual, Carrick employs very different methods of managing the dressing room. He is predicted to handle the internal purge in a more subtle way than Ruben Amorim, although the list of surplus players to be cleared still includes eight complicated names from the "ticking time bomb squad".

The opposite of martial law style

In the past, Sir Alex Ferguson remarked that Carrick lacked the arrogance of his contemporaries. He was once a timid young man who sometimes needed a firm reprimand. Now, as a manager, Carrick displays much more confidence and decisiveness. However, he still possesses a management style that is completely opposite to that of his predecessor, Amorim.

Last summer, Amorim resolutely created a separate group to isolate players who were no longer in his plans. This tough decision forced stars like Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho to train completely separately from the first team, forming a "punishment squad." Given his more moderate nature, it's highly unlikely that Carrick would repeat a similar punitive measure on players who are currently being sold.

Nevertheless, Manchester United still greatly benefits from the strict discipline that Amorim once implemented. By keeping players like Jadon Sancho, Rashford, Garnacho, Antony, and Tyrell Malacia separate, the club's pre-season tour of the United States was the smoothest and most peaceful in eight years.

Difficulties await Carrick.

Amorim effectively paved the way for Carrick to immediately get down to his professional duties without distraction. Garnacho and Antony left, while Sancho was also preparing to leave the club. Despite the thorough restructuring, the biggest obstacle, Rashford, remained clearly present in the dressing room.

Resolving outstanding issues

Rashford's situation is a thorny problem that needs a thorough solution. The 28-year-old striker currently doesn't have a shirt number but still has two years left on his contract. Even more worrying, his salary will automatically increase by 25% once the team qualifies for the Champions League again.

The ideal solution would be for Barcelona to pay £26 million to buy him outright before then. If Rashford remains stuck at the end of July or beginning of August, trying to bring him back to a team he no longer wants to play for is completely pointless.

Besides Rashford, the club's list of players to be offloaded is still very long. Andre Onana may return to the training center in early July due to Cameroon's non-qualifying for the World Cup. The goalkeeper is a warm-hearted person, and there is genuine regret from both the management and coaching staff that things didn't go smoothly for him. Therefore, punishing or banishing him would be an unwise move if he returns.

Rashford will be a difficult player to acquire this summer.

In other news, Altay Bayindir is awaiting a transfer to Besiktas. In attack, Manchester United are looking to cut their losses on Joshua Zirkzee following a series of disappointing performances. Despite being well-liked by his teammates, his lackluster form has made it difficult for him to secure a place at the club.

Neither Zirkzee nor Mason Mount were included in the World Cup squad. While Mount is a likeable person and has a good relationship with young talents, the team will have to make a definitive decision regarding him next season.

In midfield, Manuel Ugarte has completely failed to impress the club despite their personnel shortages. With Uruguay's World Cup campaign over, Carrick has likely found more quality new signings.

Finally, Rasmus Hojlund is a case worth discussing. Napoli are obligated to buy him outright for £38 million if they qualify for the Champions League. However, if Napoli change their minds and agree to pay a penalty to avoid the purchase, Hojlund will certainly be offloaded.

The striker had publicly shown defiance towards coach Amorim at Chicago last year. Furthermore, his inappropriate social media posts and disastrous performances in the Premier League have further damaged his reputation.

All those problems will be a real test for Carrick. He doesn't need the kind of "martial law" that Amorim imposed, but if he's not decisive enough to clean up the mess thoroughly, MU will struggle to enter a new era.
