Angulo swung his arm at Fernandes' face while the ball was out of play. |
Manchester United endured a disappointing match, drawing 0-0 with Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in the 36th round of the Premier League. However, what most upset manager Michael Carrick was a controversial incident at the end of the game.
In an incident at the end of the second half, Nilson Angulo lunged into a challenge and elbowed Bruno Fernandes in the face. The Portuguese midfielder reacted angrily, but referee Stuart Attwell did not blow the whistle. VAR intervened, but no penalty was subsequently given.
"Bruno said there was a collision and he wasn't happy when he got back to the dressing room," Carrick shared after the match.
The 44-year-old manager admitted he is increasingly baffled by recent Premier League referee decisions. Previously, Carrick had also publicly expressed his frustration after matches against Bournemouth and Leeds United.
"I'm starting to feel a little confused by what's going on," the Manchester United manager added.
However, former Premier League referee Mark Halsey believes VAR handled the situation correctly. According to him, Angulo's foul wasn't serious enough to be considered violent, even though the Sunderland player was fortunate to escape a yellow card.
On the pitch, MU delivered a lackluster performance, failing to register a single shot on target until injury time. This was also the first time Carrick's team had gone scoreless in 15 matches.
Carrick made five changes to the starting lineup, giving Joshua Zirkzee and Mason Mount a chance to start after a long absence.
Despite dropping points, MU still sit third in the Premier League and will be guaranteed a top-three finish if they beat Nottingham Forest in the next round.
