Currently, Chuong Duong bridge still fully ensures load-bearing capacity and normal operation. |
Chuong Duong Bridge across the Red River, connecting Hoan Kiem and Long Bien districts (Hanoi) was built in 1985. This is the first bridge designed and constructed by Vietnamese engineers during a period when the country was facing many difficulties and lacked human and material resources to build large bridge projects.
Since being handed over to the city for management, the Hanoi Department of Transport and related units have inspected the bridge twice in 2 and 2013. The most recent inspection results show that the main bridge still ensures the load-bearing capacity of HL2021 (the highest level currently applied to road bridges). The wings on both sides of the bridge are still capable of withstanding H93 (6 tons) within a range of 6m. The foundation and pillars are also capable of withstanding the load.
According to Mr. Hoang Viet Hai, Director of Transport Limited Liability Company (one of the two units participating in the inspection of Chuong Duong Bridge at the end of 2021), each bridge will be inspected once every 5-10 years. During the recent inspection, Chuong Duong Bridge was inspected in general for all components such as: pillars, bridge bearings, bridge deck, upper-lower steel trusses, expansion joints, bridge deflection, etc. to detect damage accumulated over time. From there, consultants and contractors identified the damaged part to develop a repair plan.
To accurately assess the bridge's load-bearing capacity and damage, the two inspection units mobilized a total of 50 engineers and modern measuring equipment, including 6 trucks, each weighing 27-30 tons, parked at 3 close locations for equipment to measure and assess the bridge's deflection. The inspection results were reported to the Hanoi Department of Transport to propose the city to establish a project to renovate and repair the bridge.
Every day, Chuong Duong bridge has about 95.000 vehicles passing through, more than 8 times the design. |
Every day, Chuong Duong Bridge has about 95.000 vehicles passing through, more than 8 times the design. After nearly 40 years of use, the bridge surface and expansion joints have rapidly deteriorated, and regular repair and maintenance work cannot meet the large traffic volume.
Chuong Duong Bridge currently has some damage such as potholes appearing on the bridge deck and peeling concrete covering the bridge deck in some locations; the wings are also damaged, the concrete layer is peeling off exposing the steel reinforcement; rust appears in many locations...
These contents have been reported to the city by the Department of Transport and the renovation and repair project has been approved. Currently, the Department of Transport is organizing a bidding process to select a design consultant after the basic design step (construction drawing design).
“The bridge repair project is expected to be implemented in the 2025-2026 period. Currently, the bridge still ensures its load-bearing capacity and is basically operating normally,” said Mr. Tran Huu Bao.
On September 9, the Hanoi City Traffic Safety Committee requested relevant departments and agencies to urgently review river bridges and strictly prohibit vehicles from passing through weak bridges.
The Traffic Safety Committee requested the Department of Transport and relevant agencies to review the entire traffic infrastructure system, especially the river bridges under their management in the city. For weak bridges at risk of failure, relevant agencies must urgently implement measures to prohibit people and vehicles from traveling; and to direct traffic flow and ensure traffic safety during the period of traffic ban.
The Department of Transport Inspectorate coordinates with the police and functional units to guide and direct vehicles through traffic infrastructure locations that have incidents due to the impact of storm No. 3. At the same time, local authorities conduct reviews and have traffic organization plans for traffic infrastructure systems that have incidents due to the impact of the storm, especially at weak bridge locations and localized flooding points.
