Aston Villa secured a 2-1 aggregate win over Young Boys at Villa Park in the early hours of 28 November in the UEFA Europa League. But the match was marred by crowd disturbances, with away fans clashing with police.
It all started when Donyell Malen scored the opening goal 1-0 for Aston Villa in the 27th minute. While celebrating, the striker was hit in the head by a plastic cup thrown from the away team, injuring him.
The match was then halted for nearly six minutes as Malen was pelted with objects again after he scored the second goal in the 42nd minute. Young Boys captain Loris Benito had to run to the stands to speak to the fans, asking them to stay calm.
BBC Radio 5 Live's Tom Gayle said: "Each Aston Villa goal saw a series of objects thrown from the away end onto the pitch. This led to clashes with police and Young Boys fans, with two men dressed head to toe in black being handcuffed and dragged away by police."
In the 90th minute, Monteiro scored a goal to reduce the score to 1-2 for Young Boys. But in the end, Aston Villa still won to rise to third place in the rankings with 12 points (+5 goal difference), they are only behind the two leading teams Lyon and Midtjylland on goal difference.
