The family of Mr. Vu Giong Chua, in Huoi Son village, Tam Hop commune, Tuong Duong district, is the first household to receive help from officers and soldiers of Tam Hop Border Guard Station to implement a model of planting bo bo trees - a type of tree that grows and develops quickly, is drought-resistant, and is suitable for hilly, infertile, and water-deficient soils in mountainous areas.
The station supported Mr. Chua's family with 2 million VND to buy fertilizer, support planting labor, and provide advice on tree care. After a year of planting and caring, 1 hectare of bo bo trees of Mr. Chua's family yielded 400 kg of seeds, according to the market price, each kg of dried bo bo costs 20.000 VND. The income from selling bo bo has helped his family repair their house and reinvest in production.
Sharing about the support from Tam Hop Border Guard Station, Mr. Vu Giong Chua said: “Not only providing financial support, the Border Guard Station officers also provided detailed instructions on planting and care techniques, helping the bo bo plant grow and develop well, yielding a good harvest. The Border Guard also helped the family grow rice and repair the house. Now, the family is only focusing on economic development to soon escape poverty.”
Tam Hop Commune, Tuong Duong District has 5 villages with 531 households/2.570 people, belonging to 5 ethnic groups: Kinh, Thai, Mong, Kho Mu, Tay, the poverty rate according to the new standard is still over 50%. Identifying the People as the strength, the solid support to protect sovereignty Border security, Tam Hop Border Guard Station has proactively advised and coordinated with Party committees, local authorities, and local forces to effectively implement activities to help people develop the economy and reduce poverty.
Accordingly, the Station has assigned 21 party members to be in charge of 92 households in the border area, proactively approaching households to propagate, mobilize, guide and help people actively develop the economy with specific models and jobs. Especially, changing the production method from slash-and-burn farming to growing high-yield crops, applying science and technology to livestock and crop farming to generate income.
Lieutenant Colonel Ngo Van Thien, Politic An officer of Tam Hop Border Guard Station said: “Among the models that the unit is implementing to help people, the model of planting bo bo trees under the forest canopy is proving effective. The unit has coordinated with the locality to support initial seeds, planting days and providing technical guidance on care. Up to now, households in the area participating in planting bo bo trees have initially had a source of income. In the coming time, we will continue to coordinate to expand the model to help people develop the economy, create livelihoods, reduce poverty and aim to get rich.”
Talking about the important contributions of Tam Hop Border Guard Station to the locality and the people in the area, Mr. Xong Ba No, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee of Tam Hop Commune said: “The effectiveness of the economic models that the Border Guard Station has helped people develop has been affirmed. From the specific ways of doing things, hand-holding and guiding of the Border Guard, people have gradually changed their thinking and production methods, proactively choosing crops and livestock, and applying techniques to care. Promoting the achieved results, in the coming time, the Party Committee and People's Committee of the commune will continue to coordinate more closely with Tam Hop Border Guard Station to replicate the models, ensuring compliance with the planning to help people develop the economy, eliminate hunger and reduce poverty".
