Vietnamese fans flock to Thailand to cheer on the red team bringing the cup home

Hundreds of red-clad fans bustled at Noi Bai airport at midnight, heading to Thailand to cheer on the Vietnamese team as they meet the host team again in the second leg of the 2024 ASEAN Cup (AFF Cup) final.

Although the flight took off at 11:45 p.m., at 8:30 p.m., 250 fans wearing red flag shirts with yellow stars gathered at the check-in counter to complete procedures to depart for Bangkok, Thailand.

A representative of Vietravel Hanoi Tourism Company said that the total number of fans registering for the football cheering tour (2024 ASEAN Cup final return leg) is up to more than 1,000 guests from both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. After the group departing on the night of January 4, the remaining fans will continue their journey on the morning of January 5.

Tran Y Binh's group (second from right) said that this was the first time they had gone abroad to watch football. Previously, they had only been able to cheer for their team on television. They believed that coach Kim Sang Sik and his team would bring the cup home.

Also on the midnight flight was “Hieu Rau”, a loyal fan who has never missed a match when the Vietnamese team plays. Many people are familiar with the image of a middle-aged man holding a symbolic cup in his hand to cheer for the Golden Star Warriors since the 2018 U23 Asian Cup final in Changzhou (China).
