- "Over the years, thanks to the perseverance of health workers and population collaborators, people in Chien Thang commune, a remote area, have become more proactive in reproductive health care. Not only are they practicing family planning, but many people have also proactively sought pre-marital health checkups, regular prenatal checkups, disease screenings, and healthcare for both mother and baby," said Ms. Truong Thi Hang, Head of the Population Department, Department of Health.

Chien Thang commune was formed by merging four communes: Chien Thang, Van An, Van Thuy, and Lien Son. After the merger, the commune has 12 villages with over 11,000 inhabitants, including nearly 3,000 women of childbearing age. The large geographical area, uneven population distribution, and difficult living conditions pose numerous challenges to reproductive health care.
Dr. Duong Van Thiet, Director of the Commune Health Station, said: Immediately after the merger, the Commune Health Station proactively assigned staff to be in charge of each area, coordinating with population collaborators and village health workers to review women of childbearing age and pregnant women. From there, they developed a plan to advise the commune Party committee and government on implementing activities related to reproductive health care, population and development.
The commune health station has integrated reproductive health care counseling into prenatal check-ups, vaccinations, daily medical examinations and treatments, and direct counseling at households, especially for pregnant women, young couples, poor households, and near-poor households. The counseling content is concise, easy to understand, and focuses on: the practical benefits of having regular prenatal check-ups, giving birth at a health facility, prenatal screening, newborn screening, and using safe contraception methods.
Ms. Nguyen Thi Thoa, a population specialist in the commune, shared: "To ensure people understand and comply, we conduct numerous awareness campaigns and provide detailed explanations. For pregnant women, we provide clear advice on each prenatal check-up milestone, the timing of prenatal screening, and the benefits of newborn screening. For young couples, we encourage pre-marital health check-ups and advise on suitable contraceptive methods to protect the health of both mother and child."
From the beginning of 2026 to the present, the commune's health station has organized 16 population awareness campaigns with 552 participants; and provided direct counseling to 128 households. Throughout the commune, 15 couples received pre-marital counseling and health check-ups, helping young people and couples preparing for marriage gain more knowledge about reproductive health, prevent child marriage and consanguineous marriage, and proactively manage their health before having children.
In addition, the health station regularly provides healthcare for pregnant women. Health and population officials coordinate to review the list of pregnant women in each village, keeping track of their pregnancy stages to remind them of check-up schedules, provide advice on vaccinations, nutrition, rest, and dangerous signs requiring medical attention.
Ms. Vi Thi Loc, 26 years old, from Na Lam village, shared: "When I went for a prenatal check-up at the commune health station, the staff advised me on reproductive health care, prenatal check-up schedules, and the benefits of prenatal screening. After the health staff explained, my family underwent NIPT screening from the 9th week of pregnancy."
According to data compiled by the commune's health station, from the beginning of 2026 to the present, the entire commune has had 82 pregnant women, of whom 100% received regular prenatal checkups and tetanus vaccinations on time and in full doses. Of these pregnant women, 49 have given birth, all at health facilities; mothers and newborns have received postpartum care.
Through concrete actions at the grassroots level, reproductive health care in Chien Thang commune, a remote area, is gradually becoming more comprehensive. Despite remaining challenges, the proactive efforts of the health station and the dedication of population officials and village collaborators have helped women in this disadvantaged area better access essential healthcare services. This contributes to protecting maternal and child health and improving the quality of the population from the very beginning of life.
