Raising specialty livestock: Low cost, high efficiency.

Việt NamViệt Nam11/04/2024

Driven by market demand, many farmers in Thai Nguyen province have boldly invested in commercial-scale breeding of specialty livestock. This has yielded high economic returns and contributed to opening up new avenues for production development.

The family of Mr. Nguyen Van Tuyen (in Ca hamlet, Tan Khanh commune, Phu Binh district) currently has nearly 100 mudless eel farming tanks.

After researching and realizing that the mudless eel farming model yielded high economic efficiency and had been successfully implemented by people in many provinces and cities, Mr. Nguyen Van Tuyen's family (in Ca hamlet, Tan Khanh commune, Phu Binh district) boldly invested in developing this model at the end of 2022. Having a 500m2 unused chicken farm, he renovated it into a farm for raising commercial eels and eel fry. Thanks to diligently learning from experienced farmers, the model yielded high returns from the very first batch.

Accordingly, in 2023, he sold 3 tons of adult eels to the market, at a price of 180-200 thousand VND/kg, and 50,000 eel fry, at a price of 3,500-10,000 VND/fry. After deducting all expenses, he earned over 300 million VND.

Mr. Nguyen Van Tuyen shared: "The technique of raising eels without mud is not too difficult; the main thing is to ensure a safe water source, and the feed consists of industrial feed and earthworms. The market for both adult eels and eel fry is currently very favorable, and prices are stable. Currently, I and some others are building a processing plant for eel-related products to diversify our output."

Similarly, utilizing the unused space of their chicken coop, Mr. Ha Van Nam's family (in Phu Tho hamlet, Phu Do commune, Phu Luong district) invested in raising ostriches for commercial purposes. On average, Mr. Nam raises about 20 ostriches annually and sells nearly 2 tons of meat to the market at a price of 250,000 VND/kg. He said: Ostriches are easy to raise, grow quickly, are less susceptible to disease, and their main food consists of readily available local ingredients such as leafy vegetables, grass, banana stalks, cornmeal, and cassava. After 7-8 months of raising, one ostrich yields a profit of 2-10 million VND, depending on its weight.

Based on the initial economic success, Mr. Ha Van Nam's family (in Phu Tho hamlet, Phu Do commune, Phu Luong district) plans to increase the number of ostriches they raise from 20 to 30 by the end of 2024.

Currently, in addition to Mr. Tuyen's and Mr. Nam's models, there are hundreds of other models raising specialty animals such as turtles, bamboo rats, porcupines, deer, etc., in the province, bringing in income ranging from tens to hundreds of millions of VND per year for these farms.

In the province alone, there are currently 207 licensed wildlife breeding facilities raising 30 species, with a total of nearly 27,800 animals. Following the success of some models, many people have come to learn and apply them to develop their family economies. Many models, initially started with 1-2 households, have developed into cooperatives. For example, the Trong Hung Veteran Deer Breeding Cooperative (in Tan Hoa commune, Phu Binh district) has 38 members and a total herd of over 300 deer. In 2023, the cooperative's revenue reached over 7 billion VND, with a profit of 2.9 billion VND.

Mr. Ngo Van Hung, Director of the Cooperative, said: "Previously, my family was the only one in the entire commune raising deer for antlers and breeding. Seeing the effectiveness, many people came to learn and then invested in deer farming. To support each other in terms of techniques, breeding stock, and investment capital, in 2017 we jointly established the Trong Hung Veteran Deer Farming Cooperative."

To support people in raising specialty animals, in recent times, the relevant agencies and localities in the province have intensified the organization of training courses and the transfer of advanced techniques to farmers; supported the construction of pilot models in some localities; propagated and guided people to raise specialty animals according to the orientation and linked to the consumption market; strictly controlled each model, especially for models raising wild animals that require permits...
