Latam Airlines said a piece of equipment on the runway caught fire before the flight to Porto Alegre, southern Brazil, took off. Passengers were evacuated via the plane's ramp and emergency slides.
Smoke from the fire triggered the airline's safety procedures. Fortunately, there were no casualties and the situation was quickly brought under control.
Videos circulating on social media showed flames erupting near the plane's undercarriage, accompanied by thick smoke.
According to Latam Airlines, 159 passengers then continued their journey to Porto Alegre, while the remaining 10 passengers were arranged to take other flights or ground transportation.
GRU Airport, the airport's operator, said refueling operations for other aircraft at the airport were halted for about 10 minutes. The agency said it would fully cooperate with authorities during the investigation.
The fire was determined to have originated from equipment belonging to a subcontractor responsible for loading cargo onto the Airbus A320.
