Chelsea were once a symbol of resilience in big matches under Roman Abramovich. However, in recent years, Wembley seems to have become a cursed place for the London team. Their defeat to Manchester City in the 2026 FA Cup final further extended the never-ending nightmare for "The Blues".
The losing streak began with the 2019 Carabao Cup final, when Chelsea succumbed to Manchester City after a controversial penalty shootout. A year later, they were beaten by Arsenal in the 2020 FA Cup final.
In 2021, Leicester City inflicted a painful defeat on Chelsea with Youri Tielemans' stunning goal in the FA Cup final. 2022 was even more agonizing as "The Blues" lost to Liverpool in both the Carabao Cup and FA Cup finals, both after tense penalty shootouts.
Two years later, history repeated itself. Chelsea suffered another defeat to Liverpool in the 2024 Carabao Cup final, before succumbing to Manchester City in the 2026 FA Cup.
What disappoints Chelsea fans is not just the results, but also the feeling that the team consistently lacks composure in crucial moments. Despite changing managers, overhauling the squad, and making big moves in the transfer market, Chelsea has yet to rediscover the winning DNA that once helped them dominate English and European football.
Following their defeat to Manchester City on May 16th, Chelsea officially ended their season empty-handed in all competitions. They are currently ranked 9th in the 2025/26 Premier League and are even facing the risk of missing out on European competition next season. This can be considered the most serious crisis period for the team.
