Chilean cherries are at the end of the season, so the import quantity is low, so the selling price of the 'giant' size at many stores is over half a million VND per kilogram, an increase of 10% compared to the same period last year.
According to a survey by VnExpress in Ho Chi Minh City at the end of February, most of the cherries sold on the market were imported from Chile, with very few from Australia and the US because they were out of season. At this time, the end of the season has come, so the import volume is low, so the price of Chilean cherries is 5-10% higher than the same period last year. Of which, size 3JD (large size, each fruit is 30-32 mm in diameter, equivalent to size 9 fruit from the US and Canada) is sold for more than half a million VND per kilogram.
At the imported fruit store on Phan Xich Long Street (Phu Nhuan, Ho Chi Minh City), the price of each kilogram of 3JD Chilean cherry is 599,000 VND. The price is reduced to 580,000 VND per kilogram if customers buy from 5 kg. The red cherry size 2JD (diameter 28-30mm each) is 569,000 VND, while the smaller size ranges from 250,000-300,000 VND per kilogram.
The store manager said that since mid-February, the amount of goods the store has imported has been only a quarter of what it was the previous month, about 200-300 kg. "There are fewer goods than every year, plus increased shipping costs, so the price of this fruit is 10% higher," the manager said.

Similarly, in Hanoi , large-sized red Chilean cherries are imported and sold by stores for 600,000 VND per kilogram. On the contrary, small-sized cherries are in high supply, but their quality is reduced and they are easily damaged, so many stores hang signs with discount signs.
Mr. Vo Thanh Loc - Marketing Director, co-founder of Farmers' Market, said that the end of the season causes a decrease in supply, pushing up cherry prices, especially large sizes.
The number of businesses and facilities importing this fruit to Vietnam is lower than last year. They also import lower volumes due to concerns about weak purchasing power. This, he said, makes cherry prices less competitive, increasing compared to 2023.
Since late 2011, Chilean cherries have been officially imported into Vietnam. Imported output of this fruit has increased sharply in the past two years, about 688 tons. This is also the factor that caused the price of Chilean cherries last year to drop to 200,000-300,000 VND per kilogram.
Last year, the country exported 800-1,000 tons of cherries to Vietnam, according to the Chilean Fruit Exporters Association. In the first month of this year, data from the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association showed that Chile was among the top 10 countries exporting fruits and vegetables to Vietnam, reaching 4.6 million tons, up 23% compared to the same period in 2023.
