According to the video recording the event, the Fulwin X3L – an SUV with a design reminiscent of the Land Rover Defender – was climbing the hill when suddenly there was a loud bang. A black part fell from under the car, causing the vehicle to lose control and swerve to the right, then stop, lose momentum and roll back down the stairs. The car scraped against the guardrail, collided hard and collapsed part of the protective fence.

Chery later posted an official apology on social media platforms, admitting the “unexpected incident” that occurred during the “extreme challenge” on November 12.
According to the preliminary investigation, the cause of the incident was determined to be a seat belt that slipped off and wrapped around the right wheel, resulting in a loss of transmission power. As a result, the vehicle was unable to continue climbing the slope, colliding with the guardrail and causing damage to the infrastructure at the performance area.

Chery admitted that the incident was the result of “negligence in risk assessment and technical preparation,” and pledged to repair the damage, compensate, and apologize to visitors and local residents.
The Fulwin X3L is a mid-size electric SUV. It is equipped with a range-extending powertrain with a 1.5L petrol engine, a 33.7 kWh LFP battery, and the option of rear-wheel drive or dual-motor AWD.

The four-wheel drive version delivers up to 422 horsepower, 505 Nm of torque, a 205 km all-electric range and a total range of up to 1,080 km. Ground clearance of 225 mm and approach and departure angles of 22 and 30 degrees respectively show that the Fulwin X3L is designed for real off-road capability.
In addition, the car also has a tank turn feature, 21-inch wheels and multiple off-road driving modes, showing Chery's clear ambition to compete directly with rivals from the West.
