As a mountainous province with many difficulties, fully aware of the role and importance of transport infrastructure for development, the Resolution of the 14th Lai Chau Provincial Party Congress, term 2020 - 2025, identified "Continuing to synchronously develop the economic and social infrastructure system, especially rural infrastructure and regional connectivity" and the breakthrough task "Building synchronous infrastructure, especially transport infrastructure and agricultural and rural infrastructure; focusing on key transport works connecting the province and the provinces in the region".

To thoroughly grasp and implement the Central's policies and the Resolution of the Provincial Party Congress, the Provincial Party Committee, Party committees and authorities at all levels of Lai Chau province have focused on leadership and direction, mobilizing maximum resources to invest in developing socio-economic infrastructure, focusing on transport infrastructure.
Thanks to that, the province's inter-regional transport network has made remarkable progress: The 147 km long Noi Bai - Lao Cai expressway connecting to Lai Chau city has been completed, expected to be completed by the end of 2025, opening up a major breakthrough in shortening travel time, reducing transportation costs, and improving competitiveness. National highways with a total length of nearly 500 km have been renovated and upgraded, 100% of the road surface is paved with asphalt concrete and asphalt, ensuring safe and convenient traffic.

The Hoang Lien road tunnel project connecting Lai Chau to Sa Pa (Lao Cai province) has been approved for investment and is expected to start construction at the end of 2025. When completed, the Hoang Lien pass tunnel project will help vehicles shorten about 22km of Hoang Lien pass (O Quy Ho pass) on National Highway 4D. Currently, it takes about 52 minutes for cars to cross the 22km pass, while trucks and container trucks need about 120 minutes to travel through this section. If there is a road tunnel, the travel time of the above vehicles will be only 11 minutes. The completed project is expected to contribute to completing and improving the quality of inter-provincial and inter-regional traffic infrastructure, fundamentally solving the limitations of National Highway 4D. Creating conditions to attract investment, develop tourism, and promote socio-economic development in the Northwest region.
From the provincial center to the border and remote mountainous areas, new roads not only connect geographical space but also open up development opportunities. Lai Chau is researching the construction of a multi-purpose bridge at the Ma Lu Thang - Kim Thuy Ha border gate (China), to serve trade and develop the border economy when the border gate is upgraded to an international border gate.
In addition to the national highway system, Lai Chau also focuses on investing in intra-provincial traffic. The whole province has over 600 km of provincial roads paved with asphalt concrete, reaching 100%; over 2,655 km of communal roads, the hardening rate reaches 81.59%; 1,590 km of village roads, the hardening rate reaches 85.37%. Notably, 100% of communes have car roads to the center, 100% of villages and hamlets have convenient car or motorbike roads.

According to statistics from the Department of Construction of Lai Chau province, up to now, the whole province has 7,267.5km of roads, an increase of more than 150km compared to 2020. Of which, 6 national highways with a total length of nearly 500km, 12 provincial roads with a length of 614.73km, and a rural traffic system of more than 5,800km. 100% of communes have car roads to the center, 99.68% of villages have convenient motorbike and car roads, an increase of nearly 5.98% compared to the beginning of the term.
Lai Chau has basically eliminated the traffic isolation, exceeding the targets set by the Resolution of the 14th Provincial Party Congress, creating favorable conditions for socio-economic development, improving the material and spiritual life of the people. The synchronous and modern traffic network not only helps shorten the distance but also contributes to opening up new development space, making Lai Chau gradually become a connecting center of the Northwest region.
