The vending machine sells… surprises.

The refurbished vending machine no longer sells food or drinks, but instead presents small challenges along with messages offering help to strangers.

On a sidewalk in Michigan (USA), a brightly painted vending machine offers a different experience from the norm.

With just one click of a button, users receive not food, but a small act of kindness.

The machine is the brainchild of artist Andrea Zelenak. About four years ago, after coincidentally seeing an old fishing bait vending machine, she began to envision its potential. In 2022, this idea was realized in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where she installed a project called The Kindness Challenge.

For a small fee, participants receive a mystery envelope containing a simple yet purposeful task. The challenges vary in difficulty, from easy gestures to more thought-provoking actions, all aimed at encouraging people to do good for others.

Zelenak, who runs the kindness-spreading shop called Inkcourage, said she wanted the experience to be intimate and accessible. "The machine operates 24/7, so you can stop by anytime and receive a 'mystery item'," she shared in a social media video explaining how the project works.

According to her, this idea stems from a broader concept called the butterfly effect. "When you perform a random act of kindness for someone, it can create ripple effects in the community," she said.

Since then, the machine has gradually taken on a "life of its own." It has been taken throughout Michigan, appearing at art festivals and public spaces, attracting curious people who want to know what they will receive and what to do next.

During a recent stop at the ArtPrize event, over 3,000 "acts of kindness" were distributed before the machine ran out of envelopes.

The challenges are designed to be simple.

The challenges are designed to be simple: write a message to someone, share something with a stranger, or help someone in need. But according to Zelenak, their impact can extend far beyond the initial moment. "One act of kindness can create a ripple effect in the community. I'm just encouraging people to start with something small to create something bigger," she says.

Currently located in Detroit, the machine continues to attract participants not only because of what it offers but also because of what it requires them to do.

For Zelenak, that's the core issue. The envelopes are just the beginning. "If someone says something kind to you, you might remember it for a week, five years, or even a lifetime," she shared.

While most vending machines offer things that are quick and easily forgotten, this machine was created with the opposite purpose in mind: to leave each person with something that will stay with them long after they leave.
