The September 24 airstrike killed nine terrorists, including a senior leader of Hurras al-Din in northwestern Syria who was believed to be in charge of overseeing the group’s military operations. Earlier on September 16, a large-scale attack on an IS training camp at an undisclosed location in central Syria killed at least 28 extremists, including four senior leaders.
According to CENTCOM, these attacks are aimed at weakening IS's ability to conduct operations against US interests, as well as allies and partners in the region.
There are currently about 900 US troops in Syria, along with an unspecified number of contractors. Their primary mission is to prevent the resurgence of IS, which controlled large parts of Iraq and Syria in 2014.
The US military is supporting and advising its main ally in Syria, the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).
