Chien Thang is known to the audience as an actor and comedian. He not only appears on stage and small screen but is also very popular at events.
Regarding the fact that many artists have joined the "TikTok world ", many TikTokers have stepped onto the red carpet of major events, Chien Thang commented that this is the trend of the times.
I think I'm lucky because "the profession chose me".
- Many people still say that Chien Thang is a "strange case" of the Northern comedy scene when he went from soldier to artist. What do you think about this?
I always think of myself as a lucky person who was “chosen by the profession”. I came to the acting profession by chance.
I was originally a soldier in the Military Command of Ha Giang province. In 2001, I took my younger sister to enroll in school in Hanoi, passing through the Vietnam Television Film Center. At that time, the traffic was jammed, I couldn't move, I suddenly remembered that the program Meet at the Weekend had a section for the audience, I took a risk and tried it out.
There I met director Khai Hung and presented some ideas for a skit to him and was selected. My first skit to air on Gap nhau cuoi tuan was Get a wife from three regions , my co-star that year was artist Ngoc Tuyet. Then at that time, I transferred to work at the Border Guard Command Art Troupe in Hanoi , so it was very convenient for me to participate in filming.
"I always think I'm lucky to have been "chosen by my profession," Chien Thang shared.
- So your path to the comedy stage was quite smooth?
Not exactly. In the 2000s, artists' salaries were quite low, and I was not a quick-witted person, so I took whatever was offered.
Many times when I come back from a performance in the province, after deducting expenses, there is not much left. If I have to rent a private car and cannot take the group bus, the salary is only enough for the transportation. There were times when I thought about quitting the job!
- What helped you get back up after that difficult time when you wanted to quit your job?
In 2006, I thought about quitting my job because it was too difficult. But after so many years of working, I still felt reluctant to quit. I decided to go to director Pham Dong Hong’s studio to record a skit about badmouthing my wife and sing a few bolero songs as a souvenir before “changing direction”.
But it is true that the profession chooses the person, that “memorable” product was loved by the audience, the show organizer kept inviting me to perform. Seeing that I could still make a living from acting, I continued to do it until now.

"TikTokers and artists do not influence each other's 'market'"
- Talking about competition, now is the time when digital platforms reign supreme, everyone creates content, everyone performs "skits". What do you think about this?
I think that is the general trend of the times. We live in the 4.0 era, of course content on digital platforms will be easily accessible to audiences and will grow. Not only in the entertainment field, from consumption, shopping to many other fields are developing very well on digital platforms.
The fact that many people create content and perform skits on social networks is also following that trend. And any trend or phenomenon that occurs is due to the law of "where there is supply, there is demand", the content and skits must be loved by the audience for people to produce so much.
- Does the proliferation of skits and entertainment content on social media platforms, especially on TikTok, affect the work and development of artists, specifically yours?
Personally, I don't see any influence. Everyone working in the field of art and entertainment has their own audience. If young people and organizations like TikTokers and digital content creators, there are also many people who like to meet and enjoy the works and sketches of artists. TikTokers and artists do not affect each other's 'market'.
Until now, I still "run shows" regularly, still receive love from the audience and can make a living from acting, so I think this trend does not affect my work.

- Many people have an unfavorable view of people who create digital content and sketches on social networks. What is your opinion?
I don’t have the habit of judging the direction or work of others. I believe that content on digital platforms, even if it is a hot trend, will follow the law of elimination. If those pieces and content are not of quality or have no certain value, they will not be able to continue to exist.
On the contrary, if they create good content that is meaningful to the community and the audience, I think I should encourage and support it.
- Do you use social media and produce content on platforms like TikTok, YouTube…?
I use social media to connect with my audience and share light, positive information. In my free time, I also surf TikTok for entertainment, but I don’t share my content there because honestly, I don’t have much time. When I’m not performing, I take advantage of the time to take care of my family and rest, but I don’t have enough time to produce content on digital platforms.
- Recently, Chien Thang rarely appears in the media, what is the reason?
As I have shared, I am too busy with my schedule of “running shows”, filming… so I rarely have the opportunity to interact with the media. In addition, I also do not want to share much about myself, when I have a new artistic product, I will share it with the audience.
Thank you for sharing this.
