During the rehearsal for the first debate on June 27, Mr. Donald Trump continuously launched baseless accusations against President Joe Biden and CNN executives.
This is considered one of the familiar tactics used by the former US President in previous campaigns.
When Mr. Biden delivered the State of the Union address in January, Mr. Trump repeated his request for the White House owner to "take a drug test."
Before this debate, Mr. Trump made a similar request.
Ronny Jackson, a physician who worked in the White House under Mr Trump and former President Barack Obama and is now a Republican congressman from Texas, also wrote a letter urging Mr Biden to undergo such a test.
Mr. Trump also said that Mr. Biden would not be able to keep his cool in the upcoming debate.
Trump also took aim at CNN executive Jake Tapper during the June 27 debate in Atlanta. Trump campaign spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt criticized Tapper in an interview on June 24, prompting host Kasie Hunt to abruptly end the conversation.
Not stopping there, Eric Trump, son of the former US President, answered in an interview on June 23: "My father will not only debate Mr. Joe Biden but also CNN", at the same time claiming that this news agency was biased towards Mr. Biden.
This is not the first time Trump’s opponents have faced such unfounded accusations. In 2016, Trump’s campaign claimed that Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton had become suspiciously “high” during a presidential debate and asked her to take a drug test before the next debate.
The complaints against media executives are also familiar. In 2020, Mr. Trump repeatedly called NBC reporter Kristen Welker a “notorious, radical left-wing Democrat.”
“He’s distracting voters from the main issues of the event. That’s part of Trump’s communications strategy,” said Joan Donovan, a professor of media studies at Boston University.
Even sources who are positive about Mr. Trump have admitted that these allegations are likely false, or part of a planned campaign tactic.
