Before the match, coach Hallgrimsson surprised everyone by stating that "Ronaldo often tends to control the referee's decisions". This strategist also strongly advised referee Glenn Nyberg "not to make the match too easy for Portugal".
As a result, after consulting VAR about Ronaldo's foul on defender Dara O'Shea, Mr. Nyberg decided to change the yellow card to a red card, causing the Portuguese superstar to be sent off the field in the 61st minute.
Speaking after the match, coach Hallgrimsson said: "Ronaldo's actions on the pitch were the main cause. The red card has nothing to do with me - unless I really affected his mentality."

On the way off the pitch, Ronaldo had a verbal exchange, even pointing at coach Hallgrimsson. Afterwards, the Irish strategist spoke about their brief conversation: "He complained to me because I put pressure on the referee, but I had nothing to do with it."
Meanwhile, Portugal coach Roberto Martinez said the red card was too harsh on Ronaldo. The strategist explained that Ronaldo's body collided with the opponent, not that CR7 intentionally used his elbow to play dirty.
Despite losing 2-0 to Ireland, Portugal will still qualify for the 2026 World Cup if they get a point against Armenia in the next match. However, according to FIFA regulations, violent conduct usually results in a two-match suspension, so Ronaldo is at risk of being suspended for the opening match of the World Cup next year.
