AFP news agency reported on November 14 that the US will consider medical conditions and health of dependents as reasons for refusing to grant immigration visas.

In a telegram sent in early November, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio asked US diplomatic agencies abroad to consider health conditions before deciding to issue visas.

"You must consider the health status of the visa applicant. Some of the medical conditions to consider include cardiovascular disease, respiratory disease, cancer, diabetes, metabolic disorders, neurological diseases and other mental health problems that can require care costs of up to hundreds of thousands of dollars," KFF Health News quoted the US State Department 's dispatch.

In addition, the State Department also requires visa officers to consider other factors in deciding whether a visa applicant is eligible to enter the US, including retirement age and how many dependents (children or elderly parents) he or she has.

On the dependent side, Secretary Rubio directed diplomatic missions to assess whether a visa applicant's dependent has a "disability, chronic illness, or special care need" that prevents the person from working.

The additional rules will apply to individuals seeking to immigrate to the United States, not to regular short-term visits, a source familiar with the matter confirmed to AFP.

Observers say this is President Donald Trump's latest move to restrict foreigners from entering the US.

Washington has previously considered whether a person would become a “public charge” to government funds before granting an immigration visa, including in the case of Americans wanting to sponsor their spouses.

However, the Trump administration has placed particular emphasis on immigration and borders - one of the prominent pledges in the US leader's election campaign and subsequent agenda.

“It is no secret that the Trump administration puts the interests of the American people first. This includes implementing policies that ensure our immigration system does not become a burden on American taxpayers,” State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott said in a statement.
