Previously, the main source of income for Ms. Phan Thi Tam's family was mainly from growing straw mushrooms and raising cows for breeding, but the family's economy was still unstable. After many times of struggling to learn about typical economic development models, effective business through newspapers, radio and locally, in 2001, Ms. Tam realized that the oyster mushroom growing model could develop in accordance with the family's economic conditions, so she boldly implemented it.
While working and studying, Tam and her husband's mushroom farm gradually developed, with higher productivity and quality. When accumulating a lot of experience in the field of growing gray oyster mushrooms, she continued to learn, research, and use fresh milk to water the mushrooms at the right time to bring milk oyster mushrooms to the market.
Ms. Phan Thi Tam in Tan Thanh hamlet, Tan My commune (Ba Tri district, Ben Tre ) harvests oyster mushrooms.
Ms. Tam shared: “Seeing that the gray oyster mushrooms can only be harvested 2-3 times, the rate of mushrooms growing from the time of bud to harvest is not much, not even, I think the mushrooms lack nutrients. From there, I supplement nutrients for the mushrooms by watering them with milk. When the harvest day is near, the day I want to harvest such as the 14th and 29th of the lunar calendar is used by many people, including vegetarians, I proceed to water the mushrooms with milk. At that time, the mushrooms will grow evenly, flourish to be harvested at the same time, selling on time. Not only that, the nutrients remaining in the embryo will help the mushrooms grow many times later.”
In addition, Ms. Tam has researched the use of oyster mushroom waste to grow straw mushrooms, with results that are both higher in yield and quality than traditional straw mushroom growing. From here, Ms. Tam decided to grow oyster mushrooms to start a family business.
Currently, with an area of 32m2, she grows 4,000 mushroom spawns, harvesting 2 batches per month, averaging 160kg of mushrooms, after selling, deducting costs, she still has a profit of over 4 million VND. It is worth mentioning that the time to harvest milk oyster mushrooms is 3 times longer than the time to grow traditional gray oyster mushrooms, stimulating the development of the desired harvest time, the commercial mushrooms are white, full, hard, when processed, they have a more fragrant, sweet, and crispy taste, so they are favored by consumers.
Chairwoman of the Women's Union of Tan My Commune, Nguyen Thi Thu Van, said: "Ms. Tam successfully started a business growing oyster mushrooms. In the near future, we will introduce this model to female members in the commune for replication. The Union will also implement the "1+1" model among female members. This model is that 1 well-off member helps 1 member in difficult circumstances. To implement this model, Ms. Tam is always ready to help members in difficult circumstances with capital and experience."
Ms. Phan Thi Tam's oyster mushroom growing model will be replicated by women's union members of Tan My commune and Ba Tri district to start a business, develop family economy, and contribute to building new rural areas.
