In the days leading up to the Lunar New Year, Hang Be Market (Hoan Kiem, Hanoi), also known as the "rich people's market", not only attracts people to shop for Tet but also makes tourists curious to come and experience it. Some travel companies include Hang Be Market in the list of destinations in the Old Quarter tours during the pre-Tet period.
From the 15th of the 12th lunar month until the 30th of Tet, this market is always bustling with buyers and sellers. Established during the French colonial period, Hang Be is not the main market but only a collection of food and processed food stalls located on several sections of Gia Ngu, Cau Go, Hang Be and Trung Yen alleys.
This is a famous market with many fresh and delicious dishes, attractively prepared, bearing the "uniqueness" of Hanoi cuisine such as chicken with wings (boiled chicken with rose), roasted quail, braised fish, braised meat, fried spring rolls...
Hang Be Market is also famous for its expensive prices, so it is also called the "rich people's market" in the heart of the old town.
When visiting and traveling to Hanoi during the days before Lunar New Year, in addition to visiting Hang Ma, Hang Luoc, Quang An and Quang Ba flower markets, Nhat Tan peach village... many tourists also come to experience the famous "rich people's market" of the capital.
Foreign tourists enjoy watching vendors cook sticky rice, fry fragrant spring rolls and pay special attention to the golden-skinned, shiny chickens with red roses in their mouths, shaped in eye-catching shapes. They also eagerly listen to the tour guide introduce the traditional market and Tet holiday of Vietnam.
The chicken offering with a rose in its mouth comes in many sizes, with the average price of each offering chicken ranging from 500,000 to 600,000 VND, while the larger ones cost from 700,000 VND to a million VND. This is a "specialty" of Hang Be market. This price is quite expensive compared to other places, but the shop owner is still in a state of "making it all, selling it all", and buyers stand in long lines, ready to take out their wallets.
Besides chicken, other offerings such as sticky rice cost from 60,000 - 120,000 VND/plate, roasted bird from 150,000 - 350,000 VND/bird, spring rolls cost 120,000 VND/box, mixed meatball soup costs 80,000 - 100,000 VND/bowl.
Two fish stew shops located next to each other in Cau Go alley are always "overloaded" during rush hour. They sell all kinds of food such as braised grass carp with galangal, braised mackerel with meat, braised shrimp, braised pork with coconut, braised pork, braised ribs...
Shops selling pickled cucumbers and onions - indispensable dishes on Tet holiday meals - also attract diners.
Peach branches, fruits, flowers, and incense... are sold throughout the market, creating a typical atmosphere of the Lunar New Year.
Visiting Hang Be market these days, tourists can clearly feel the bustling atmosphere and excitement of the capital's people welcoming Tet.
