Dong Trieu ( Quang Ninh province ) is a very favorable area for growing onions, especially dried onions (bulb onions). Dong Trieu onions have become a famous agricultural product brand.

In the winter crop season of 2025, Dong Trieu ward planted 53.2 hectares of onions and garlic, with a high concentration in the following neighborhoods: An Bien (24 hectares), Nguyen Hue 8 (13 hectares); the remaining areas have smaller-scale production including Van Giang (2 hectares); Nguyen Hue 2 (1.5 hectares); Nguyen Hue 3 (1.5 hectares)... Currently, the onion plants are in the stem and leaf development stage.

Currently, the cool nights and sunny days create favorable conditions for onion growth, and farmers are actively tending to the plants and controlling pests and diseases.

The Dong Trieu Ward Service Supply Center has assigned staff to proactively visit fields, guide and support farmers with techniques for fertilizing and controlling pests and diseases on winter onion crops.

Monitoring has revealed that some onion crops have shown signs of root rot and stem/bulb rot, affecting 1-3% of plants, with localized damage reaching 10%, and even over 30% in some cases. The affected area is estimated at approximately 2.5 hectares, mainly concentrated in Nguyen Hue 8 neighborhood.

Onion bulb rot is caused by the fungus Sclerotium cepivorum (white mold), which spreads through soil, irrigation water, seeds, and farming tools. The disease is particularly prevalent in clay soils with high humidity and poor drainage. Easily recognizable symptoms include stunted growth, yellowing leaves from the top to the base, followed by wilting and death. Upon examination, the roots and bulbs are found to be rotten, with white, cotton-like fungus and dark brown sclerotia. The fungus spreads rapidly, significantly reducing onion yield if not detected and controlled properly.

To proactively prevent bulb rot disease in onions during the 2025 winter crop season, the Dong Trieu Ward Service Supply Center has requested the Agricultural Production - Business - Service Cooperative and neighborhoods in the area where onions are grown to inform households to regularly inspect their fields, detect diseased plants early, and remove and destroy them.

Balanced fertilization, increased use of organic and microbial fertilizers helps plants grow stronger and more resistant to disease, and proper irrigation management helps maintain soil moisture. For areas of onion plants that are not yet infected, biological control measures should be intensified to control harmful fungi. For infected areas, simultaneous spraying should be organized to achieve effectiveness across the entire infected area.

Regular field inspections and monitoring of crop growth not only help farmers in Dong Trieu ward proactively manage pests and protect their 2025 winter crop production, but also maintain the productivity and economic efficiency of onion cultivation in the area.
